The gear ratio is calculated by assuming that both props spin in opposite directions, but at the same rpm.
With this assumption, the derivation for the gear ratio formula results in this:
R = (1 + 2*(Nring/Npinion))
R = Gear Ratio
Nring = Number of Teeth on the Ring Gear
Npinion = Number of Teeth on the Pinion Gear
In operation the assumption isn't exactly true because the speed of the two props change as a function of airspeed and power loading, which causes the actual gear ratio to adaptively change during a flight.
