Default RE: AXI 5330/F3A Flight Report

Guys

I have just bought into my first 2 meter pattern model. It is an Otop with an Axi 5330/18 and Jeti spin 99 ESC. I know this is by no means a top of the range outfit but I was able to buy the lot for $800 all new and boxed so if it does not work out I have not spent a fortune. I will upgrade to a better model if I like flying F3a. I also intend to use my existing Hyperion 20C 5S 3700 batteries to keep costs down at the moment. If flight times are around 6 minutes I will be happy as I will not be doing any competition flying meantime.

Can you give me some prop suggestions? I understand this setup would not take a big (22") prop is that correct?

Best regards

John

You are going to have to stay with smaller props. 20x10 (that's about as big as I would get) would be a good start. Use a wattmeter to help you choose the prop, try to stay under 80 amps with 70-75 being ideal (depending on the batteries of course). The /18 will pull a lot of current otherwise, but will be plenty of power for your airplane.

Thanks Tom

20x10 was going to be my starting point.

O.K.- interesting stuff here. Have read about this motor on Chris Moon's site and a newer 5325/24 is reportedly on it's way or already here. Thinking of converting my glow BRIO over as a first electric. Keith Black sent some installation photos from his electric BRIO and would appreciate anyone else's using this combo. I realize that most electric BRIOs are approaching or have reached their expiration date , but someone out their probably has a nice one one with this motor.I would appreciate any details and photos of the mount and cooling provisions.

Also, does anyone have data on the 5325/24 (already know its lighter)that would help me lean towards it or the older 5330/F3A for my BRIO ? I think it will comeout on the ragged edge of 11lbs. , but the design is quite draggy.

I have several flights on the AXI 5325 and it is a very nice motor. I don't think I could recommend it for an 11 lb draggy airplane, but it will handle maybe up to 10.5 lb ok. I flew with a variety of props and the 20x13 seemed to wrok pretty well.

On the Brio, I would prefer the 5330/F3A over the 5325 just due to the weight and drag aspect.

See msg #28 in the following RCU thread for some Eagle Tree charts on a couple props with the AXI 5325 motor.

Tom

I notice from your photographs in post#1 that you seem to have mounted the Axi back to front. Sorry to sound like an idiot but this is still a black art to me at the moment! How do you get the propshaft to the back of the motor to acheive this?

Best regards

John,

You don't sound like an idiot at all, it's a good question. I used an adapter that screwed on the case of the motor. The motor comes with an adapter for either side, you can also buy them separately. Below is a better picture of the motor being mounted on standoffs, hopefully you can see what I mean.

Just to add:
You can buy a nice X-mount adaptor from Dualsky which fits the Axi perfectly-I got several from the American importer for very small sums(2Dog RC).
It's the one intended for the Dualsky 6360 series of motors.
Also, Axi themselves do a smaller(8mm as against 12mm diameter) prop shaft-which saves having to ream out the prop boss so much, and which then matches the shafts of things like the Dualsky, Plettenberg, and Hacker F3A motors....

Yes, your photographs are clear and I can see the adaptor and standoffs just like I would use in a gasser. I can see now that the motor is not reversed, Ok I will try to get a mount over here and I can make the standoffs myself. With a fixed top cowl as on the Otop I am going to use a carpenters adjustable mould to get the correct profile for the fuselage and then make a carbon former slightly undersize. First I will tape the motor / spinner to the nose ring with a 3/32" spacer between the spinner backplate and the front of the nose ring to get the correct position for the former, once the former is glued in I can adjust the length of the standoffs to get a perfect (hopefully!) fit.

Best regards

Tom M.( Ex-Fokker Flyer)
Is that mount you have pictured on what appears to be a Focus the Dualsky Mount or one you fabricated ?

Thanks,

It's an Esprit mount with a couple modifications. The screw holes were too close to the edge of the firewall so new holes were drilled closer to where the 'meat' of the firewall was. Here is the link to the mount: [link=http://www.espritmodel.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=678]Esprit Type Mount[/link]

The website is not totally clear on how to order the mount, if in doubt call them, I've always gotten good service from them.

There is nothing special about their mount, it's something most people can fabricate on their own with the right equipment. I don't have that equipment nor a whole lot of spare time, so its easier for me to buy ready made parts. I have assorted standoffs, mounting plates laying around and recently I used these parts as a basis for my latest project, mounting a Neu F3A in my Black Magic. Below are a couple of pics. Took some figuring and considerable head scratching to figure out how I was going to do it, but in the end it was a pretty simple solution, works pretty well.

If you are going to mount a motor this way, especially with long stand offs its really important to have a stiff firewall. Ideally I would think you would want to spread out the load with a larger footprint than what the Esprit Mount affords but as long as the firewall is stiff, you shouldn't have a problem.

Guys

Anyone know where I can get the Dualsky 6360 "X" mount referred to earlier either in the UK or Europe?Apparently it will fit my Axi 5330/18.

Thanks

Thanks for that. I have e-mailed them to ask if they will ship a couple of mounts to the UK.

TNWalker

You gave a very detailed reply in post 95 to Alexzzz regarding motor setup on the Axi 5530/FAI using the Jetibox. I have just bought an Axi 5330/18 and Jeti spin 99 with an Otop all new in box.I do not have a Jetibox but the instructions give information on setting up the ESC using the Tx and tones, I would intend to use Aero mode 2 which is a no brake setup. In your opinion can I safely use this setup? I am new to serious electric flying and the setup instructions you gave Alexzzz seem daunting to me as a Beginner.[] I am quite willing to get a Jetibox if you think it is necessary. Any advice gratefully received.

Best regards

John,

Dave Kelly has a Jetibox and I'm sure he would lend you it to you to set up your ESC. I am happy to help you with the setup if you would like. Are you going to Leuchars on the 26th because we could do it or have a chat then if Dave is going or could get the jetibox to you? If not we could do it another day.

Cheers

Malcolm

Many thanks for your kind offer, any help would be appreciated during my conversion to the dark side! Unfortunately, or maybe not, I will be in Portugal on the 26th and will miss Leuchars. In the meantime I will contact Dave Kelly and see if he can help me with my setup.

Best regards

Sorry to revive this old thread but I figured it was more appropriate to add to here than start a new one.

Does anyone know what settings you are using with the current Castle 3.2 software? I'm having screeching issues at about 80% throttle and higher. Unfortunately I cannot downgrade to 1.55. The Lowest I can downgrade to is version 2.16 Beta.

Thanks in advance!

Firmware 3.20 works fine for my 5330/F3A
Low starting power, low throttle response
Timing set to low or outrunner mode, I don't feel any difference
PWM set to 8kHz.
I'm using 20C LiPo pack. I heard that 30C or higher may have issue, but I only have 20C packs, so I cannot comment on this.
Hope this will help.
