Default Data Loggers - E Pattern

I know several of you are using a data logger. It seems like the Eagle Tree is the most popular here, but I also see the Medusa data recorder. Just wondered if anyone has had the opportunity to compare the two side by side. Looks like the Medusa has more storage capability but otherwise very similar.

Also would like to here opinions for the necessity for having a data logger.

Thanks
Brian

I didnt see a power panel like add on to the Medusa, and that right there would win it for me. The power panel with the eagle tree turns your logger into an instant watt meter, and allows you to view max or mins of your parameters after a flight without the need for a computer.

With the power panel I rarely even plug the logger into the computer anymore since most of what I am really interested in is displayed on the power panel anyways.

If the Medusa has a power panel, then it seems like a toss up unless the software is significantly better or worse.

Eagle tree has now come up with a new version (V4) and I just bought it, including a temp sensor to measure pack or motor.

You can also buy a RPM sensor. Does anybody has experience with this on a pattern plane? How would you install it. Or is it not necessary?

Never used a Medusa but liked my Eagle tree w/ panel. Nice to see data at the field and not have to wait until I get home. Not sure what version I have but the little plug in temp sensor works pretty well but I rarely use it anymore. In flight numbers don't mean a lot unless something is really wrong. I use a cheap IR thermometer on landing to measure batteries or motors since that is when they will be the warmest.
Like most I tried the rpm sensor on a couple of different motors and never got very good data. Switched to CC Ice controllers and haven't looked back. The data is right on and no extra wires. The ESC temp is very telling as well since I could never get a good measurement for that.
I now only use the Eagle Tree as a wattmeter with the Ice date for any serious number crunching.

Medusa Research is no longer in business. That means you have little choice for data logging. Personally, I use the Eagle Tree but only use it on new set-ups or a new prop. The RPM sensor is pathetic. It just doesn't work with my set-ups.

Castle also has some data logging features built into their ESC's.

Regards,
Jason.

Is that the magnetic one or the optical one?

Bummer that they are out of business. Hadn't heard that.

I have the Medusa setup. I like it a lot! Don't use it that much though. No need really once you have your plane setup IMO. But good for watching temps/amps while setting up a new plane or motor. I don't really feel the need to check my amps every flight. So while the power panel may be good for some, I wouldn't use it most likely except during the initial flights. Which it would be quite handy for though. That is a good feature! I believe with the Medusa you can put the meter in the plane and it will record max stuff though for the flight. I never tried that though so I could be wrong. Its a cool setup, but I'm sure the Eagle is great also.

received today my V4 datalogger, despite the fact that the EMCOTEC website said it was not on stock. So they are available already.
