Where is the longitudinal axis line on the fuselage (Or, at least, a zero AOA line I can reference to)? It looks like it may be from the cowl bumps to the stab holes.

Limited amount of bipes came in and they went bye,..bye very fast! I want to get one ready for the NATS,..we will see. If not,...I need to get a back up plane ready anyway,......The way work is, don't think a composite is in my future at the moment, but who knows?

Build photos.
Details of the pull-pull setup can be seen. Note the location of the rudder horn was raised and the original rudder cable exit hole was used for the top elevator cable exit. This works okay, but if I had it to do over, I would move the elevator cable exits forward to be directly under the repositioned rudder cable exit.
ESC: There's a hole in the firewall with a short balsa box behind it that forms a cubby for the ESC.
As stated previously, this is an electric experiment ship for me and little attempt was made to save weight. As best as I can measure right now, it's about a pound overweight. We can think of numerous places to shed ounces, but I'm not worried about that right now.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
I got a few flights on the plane today. It's very straight right out of the box and only required a little down trim.
The best prop I had was the wood Xoar 18x12 electric. Unfortunately I shattered it....just not enough ground clearance with the stock struts.
Bolly's out of business. ES struts aren't on Central's inventory. Where can I get some longer struts???

Ron, I just finished my Element, first flight this weekend. I found a very long set of CF gear at this place, and I am running a 21 in prop.

Alex, I'm horribly technology challenged. If I can figure out how to use my digital camera, take some reasonable pictures and figure out how to load to this site, I'll give it a shot
Yes I am electric, mounted the Plettenberg, first flight should be Saturday, if the rain stops here in Nor Cal.

show me some nice pictures of your element
are you electric set up?

See attached pic of the Bipe right before it maidened - unfortunately a very short flight because of technical problems but I'll get it in the air again when I get back in early April. I've since added the decals - see the other pics.

Jim-
I'm trying to shed some weight, especially in the nose. Unfortunately, I only lost about 1-2oz. I had hoped for more, but I guess I was unwilling to sacrifice much strength after seeing what can happen if the motor gets loose like Jerry Budd's. I'm still puzzled; the nuts and bolts I removed were 2oz., I'm sure.
The plane is quite noseheavy. Next I'll be moving one or both of the batteries back.
Lightening is a hard-fought battle.

Hey Ron,
Very nice job!
Unfortunately there are not many areas you can shed weight in the airframe at this point with the electric setup. A pound over is pretty significant to overcome as you already know. The plane flies very well,..you will find the plane likes a more forward CG.
Are you planning on flying it at the Tangerine this weekend?

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
I agree about this plane liking a forward CG. I have about 30 flights now. The initial flight required every click of up trim I had to keep it in the air. I incorrectly though this was a CQ issues and spend a number of hours building a new battery mount, attached to the wing. Smarter guys than me, Don and Amir convinced me my issue was wing/stab incidence. Luckily this plane has a nifty stab adjuster. After getting the stab where it belonged, I moved the battery back where I started, as in this picture, and voila! Knife edge requires almost no elevator correction. The CQ is probably a few cm forward of the recommended range.

Yep,......love the way the stabs adjust,..one bolt for both. There is no goofing around with working on both stabs with a incidence meter. It's still not a bad idea to check them,..I found I had to tighten the tube on one side,..no big deal! Where did you end up setting your stab at?

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Bill, my stab is now set at about .25 negative. I just kept moving it until the evelator trim ended up exactly neutral with the stab. I never measured it befor the first flight, I bet it was actually positive.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Dale,
Thats about right,..I used down thrust so I could zero out my stabs,..the plane actually flies better like that (my composite did anyway). QQ had a similar set up for the PL Partner using down thrust but I do not fly with everything at zero with the PL either as recommended. My Partner is slightly unique with it's own wierd issues that need to be fixed to make it fly right. Sounds like your making good strides on getting it dialed in.
I think you will really like the plane when you get it where you want it. Looking forward to seeing the new P-11/F-11 from Fliton, should be interesting and bigger.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
I set my stab for zero initially and I've added no trim or mix for knife edge.
But my CG is an inch forward of the recommended range and I suspect that's why I'm running out of rudder power on the knife-edge loop entry. I'm tail-light with the pull-pull so I plan on moving one or both Rhinos back to the wing.
Dale-Did you find you had plenty of room under the pan back there?
-Ron

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Ron, there was no issue at all with clearance under tha pan. Putting the battery centered under the gear, brought the CG to the back of the suggested range. I made the mount to allow even further back, as in this picture, but now not using it. Need to remove the weight
