RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Chris ... am just kidding about the 3D bit, what is your mix for the upline? I am just starting to program mixes for my plane. Almost lost it over the weekend when I was switching on the differential and executing some rolls at the same time. My plane cleared the deck at about 8'. I thought it was a goner! I pulled on the elevator stick when inverted.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
I have a pull to the canopy on uplines and downlines. The wing incidence isn't adjustable, so I put a mix in at low throttle, and full throttle to down ele. You wouldn't know unless I told ya.. lol.. I'm flying the cg much further forward right now than most people probably would though. I'm going to do some experimenting with the cg still. I know the pull wasn't there till I move the batteries forward.
Glad you saved yours!!

With where I'm flying the cg, I need like a 1/2" shim Don.. I can and still am going to try shimming it, just haven't got that far yet as I'm having fun flying it. I could also try changing the motor and stab incidence instead. Not sure if that's allowed in the book though.. Right now, seeing as I'm not working, I have plenty of time for that.. lol.
Any more progress on yours? I have a standing offer from Dennis K to buy mine after he saw the second flight at Hollister. Now that I got the Beryll from Jon, I don't have any wall space for this one. lol.. I'm having second thoughts about selling it though.. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

still waiting for my replacement to show up. The first one I received suffered from the 'too much turkey (epoxy)' syndrome. Too heavy to make into an electric. Hopefully the new one will be acceptable weight.

Well, I guess it doesn't matter if it is the balsa, epoxy or plywood, I wasn't too interested in an extra 10oz out of the box..... No problems with Alex, I am just waiting for the replacement to come in.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
I've been gone for the past 10 days visiting in-laws in SoCal... prior to leaving I had just about finished my ARC composite. The only things left for me to do are to build the battery tray and mount the nose pan. As it stands right now (unpainted) I am at 4995g. I know I can save some more weight if I use a lighter wing tube but we'll see. I'm sure I'll be in the 5100-5150g range after painting.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Well, I'm not too concerned - this was a prototype Element 170 composite that was built in early 2008. I've had it sitting in my shop since then and haven't done anything with it. Had I gone with a glow motor then I think I would have been under 5kg (painted) but I wanted to go electric so this was an experiment for me.
All my weights are based on me weighing individual components and then totaling them up... I've done some trimming on the fuse and canopy to accommodate electrics so it may in fact be lighter than what it is right now. I'm going to weigh the fuse (completed) in the next day or two (without the motor since I had to send the motor in - but I know its weight) and then I should be able to give a definitive total on the weight.

That is pretty uncool flyhighaway. Coming into a build thread and posting an advertisement for something you are affiliated with.which is obvious by your signature.

A60-20S.
For speed control I bought a Castle Creations 110HV and for batteries I bought a couple of sets of Rhino 4900s. I haven't a clue how I'll set those up. I just quit for the night so I'm not going any further now. I'll go back over your pictures, Chris, and get some ideas.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Grotto ... is that the 170 Element or the Composite one? I did not read back that much but is it the wood version with the beam mount removed?
The over weight issue only happened to a few planes and is not because of a bad manufacturing process. Guess sometimes things happen and a few porky planes will escape. What is great is that Fliton was really quick to respond by simply offering to replace them. That is great customer service for me! Now am waiting for my replacement to arrive too.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Thanks Chris. I'm interested in any pictures you have around the battery and ESC area. A different angle might reveal some small fact I need.
TIANci- This is the wooden one I won in a raffle and decided to use as a testbed without regard to the weights. However I know there's a lot of areas where weight can be removed and I'll tackle that (maybe) after it's flying.
I removed the center part of the beam mount following the edge of the lightening holes up to the front inch or so where I made a straight line to the nose ring. The biggest piece of ply I removed weighed exactly one ounce.
