Beryll Flight Reports?
I know there are not many of the new Matt designed Beryll out there yet, but was wondering if there are any flight reports?
Thanks |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
I was fortunate enough to get a Beryll and I am putting it together now. I hope to have a first flight within a month or so. I will post a flight report then. The "kit" is beautiful, usual Oxai high quality.

Jon:
What is your anticipated power setup? We would love to see some pictures. Mike |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Mike - I will be running the Hacker C50 14XL Competition motor with the 6.7:1 gearbox and the 90A speed control. My plan is to use the TP5300 10S4P batteries. I am currently flying an electric Angels Shadow with the same basic setup (it has the regular Hacker C50 14XL) and it works great. All of the power that you could ever want and, so far, great reliability. I basically went to school on Tony Frackowiak and Jerry Budd out here and copied their equipment setup (Thanks guys!) I am a firm believer in "imitation being the sincerest form of flattery"
I will try and post some pictures later this week. Thanks Jon Carter |

Any updates on your Beryll? |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
O.K. ! I will really try and get some pictures up later this week. I am hoping to do the first flight this coming Sunday. Work and a nasty cold have slowed me down somewhat.

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
I did the first flight on the Beryll on Sunday. It was great! :D I still don't have any pictures but Scott Covey took some video and it's on the NSRCA D7 website (http://www.nsrca.org/d7/) I set up the control throws the same as my electric Angels Shadow and they are all about right. I set the wing at 0 and the stab at 1/2. The plane took about 6 "beeps" of up elevator trim and about two "beeps" of right aileron. (I have my trims pretty de-sensitized so that's not very much control surface movement) I put 4 fairly easy flights on it gradually building up to snaps and spins on the last flight and everything went very well. It has a touch of pull to the belly on knife but just a touch. The up and down lines were very straight. (Except for my wobbles!) It's a beautiful plane and it seems to fly as good as it looks. I think the Matt's have another winner here!

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Jon;
I've watched the video twice, I like the way the plane presents. Now the questions begin Do you have an all up weight yet? Two elevator servos in the stab or single with DEPS or other similar system? Where did the CG end up? Did you really mean that the stab was 1/2 positive to the wing or vice versa? Thanks Mike |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Mike - The plane really does present well! It's got a really nice constant speed "look" to it.
The real (no kidding) all up weight is 10lbs 15oz. I'm 1 oz under the limit. I didn't really go out of my way to be truly fanatical about weight reduction. At the same time I tried not to add any extra weight either. My Angels Shadow-e is 10 lbs 8oz. That said, the Beryll flies very "light" to my feeling. I am running two Futaba 9650 mini digitals in the stab. I am also running the 9650's for the ailerons. Per an e-mail from Wolfgang Matt I set the C/G at 175mm from the wing leading edge. My starting point for incidence was putting the stab incidence 1/2 degree negative to the wing. (I am not usually super careful with this because I always find myself adjusting wing and sometimes stab incidence based on flight performance) I will post more as I trim it out. Thanks Jon Carter |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
What a beautiful website! Thanks for sharing that video with us. Hope all the test flights go well. Someday, I'll be going electric! I just have too much invested in my brand new Angel's Shadow/YS at the present time.

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
The website is really great. Scott Covey is our webmaster and he has really "pumped" up the site. He uses a wireless hookup and actually puts preliminary contest scores up as the contest is going!
The Angels Shadow is a great plane also. That's what I've been competing with for the past 4 years. I currently have about 85 flights on my electric Angels Shadow and I really like it. It will be a tough choice as I get more familiar with the Beryll of which plane to fly!:D Thanks Jon Carter |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi
Have about 20 flights on my Beryll. Do you also find that there was to much right thrust at the start? Had to reduce by a bit. |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi
The Beryll is an absolute beautiful plane with exceptional paint quality. After flying an Impact it is a great improvement, but obviously very costly. Can buy two Impacts for the price of one Beryll, and I got mine directly from OXAI. The nice thing is that every set up is done by OXAI and can be trusted. Took two days from work and plane was ready to fly. The only aspect that I had to change to date is to reduce the right thrust. At half throttle it is ok but anything more and it pulls quite a lot to the right. I am almost there. Tucks a little to the belly on knife edge, about 5% up elevator mixing on JR 10X. Rolls are axial and snaps are great. Flying Hacker Comp 14 XL with APC 21X13 E wide blade and TP 5300 batteries. And this is the greatest, all up weight 4,802 KG. I used some of this available weight by building a removable battery tray untill all the CG set up was complete and prop selection finalized. The batteries do not go on the intended place on the front tray and had to be moved back to get correct cg. Will post some stats and pictures. |

flyf3a:
We are getting ready to finish off our Beryll. Pics and stats of your final setup would be fantastic. Thanks Mike Wickizer |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
I have not noticed a need to change the right thrust. I also have a mix in to fix the tuck to the belly on knife edge (~ 5% also) I have ~ 70 flights now and I am really liking the way the Beryll flys. I have moved the CG back a bit from the starting point (175mm back from the leading edge) I am at about 185mm now.
The Beryll flys so great that I might have to try and get another one! Jon Carter |

Hi
Kit weight from Oxai was 2320 grams and weight at maiden flight was 4706 grams. Will measure throws and setup tonight and post. Attached some photos. |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi there
Some general stats on the Oxai kit in grams out of the box for those that want to compare apples with apples. Stabs 94 grams left and right Wings 374 grams left and right Landing gears 73 grams left and 68 grams right. If you use ZN Line gears they weigh 37 grams each. Spats 16 grams left and right Canopy 183 grams Fuselage including rudder and all formers already installed 969 grams. Wing joiner tube 57 grams and stab joiner tube 8 grams The wings and stabs are pre manufacturred for Futaba servos and rather than butchering the beautiful finish I opted for these rather than my usual JR servos. Using 8411 on rudder and JR PCM 10 X. Out of box to fly in two days, only install radio, fix gears, spats and engine. 15 mm throw on ailerons (10 % exp) and 10 mm on elevator (15% exp). Rudder max throw with (50% exp). 8 point throttle curve as with Hacker no use for more than half throttle to fly most of the F3A schedule. Only mix is ruder to elevator for knife edge flight. All linkages are MK, MK tail wheel and power box digi swith (only 15 grams). Control horns from ZN Line as my kit did not have these although I paid for it. No spinner was included in kit although again paid for and opted for Carbon spinner 82 mm. EVO 20 (1200mah) receiver battery, will give more than 5 flights easy. |

F3A:
Thanks for the information. Our airframe has very similar weights. You have done a nice job finishing it off. thanks |

Hi underwood
14 min flight time use 4230 mA. All my TP 5300 packs has between 50 - 60 cycles of charge with Orbit microlader and EMCOTEC-Balancer. BRG Fritz |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi
Have 160 flights on my first TP 5300 pack and still going strong. I balance after every flight and never fly more than one schedule. One flight takes no more than +- 3100 mah. When charged packs are 42 V and after flight when measured more than 38 V still left. Regards F3A (Burt) |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
hi,burt,
are you the same person who i met in 1995,when i flew at the south african nats f3a?i flew a summit 3 then and sold my model out there, you where friends with rodney??,i may have got this all wrong!!... regards steve underwood |

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi Steve
It you mean the 2005 at RMAC and you refer to Rodney Donaldson then yes. I will look at my old photos. If not mistaken that was also the year that John Mee and friends came out. Congratulations on the Beryll, you will never regret the purchase. Attach photo taken of my Beryll two weeks ago at our Masters and also group photo, you will recognise some of the pilots like Pierre Marais, Andre Stockwell and Ivan Olivier. Regards Burt |

RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
hi burt,

Hi Steve
I am out of country at present and cant tell you 100%. JP Zardini from ZN Lines also flies Beryll and I asked him to sent without knowing what the sizes were. If not mistaken two sets of large for Rudder and ailerons and one set of meduim for elevator. Aslo asked him to send you his soft mount system, very simple, carbon ring with three rubber grommets, I think the helicoper guys use the grommets, has 3mm bolt on one side and thresded for 3 mm on the other side that mounts through the front of the plane. You might consider getting four grommets as I found that I had to reduce the right thrust and ad a bit of down thrust to stop the plane from climbing and veering to the right when opening from half to full throttle. Attach find photo of setup. Regards Burt |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
hi burt,
many thanks will mail him to day my friend, are you off ant where nice,as it is raining here in the uk!!!! regards steve[:o] |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi
Spend some time in Kenya and Botswana, average temp 36 degrees per day with the evenings cooling down to about 28 degrees. Believe JHB is also raining and will be back this afternoon and then on my way to the coast. Our days are hot at presnet, 31 to 36 and with the cooling on the Beryll the Thunder Power batteries hardly feel the heat. Regards Burt |
RE: Beryll Flight Reports?
Hi Pete,
Noel Barrett in Ireland is the sole distributor of Oxai RC Europe models in Ireland and the UK. You can contact him via his website, http://www.noelbarrettmodels.com/. I've been dealing with Noel for over 15 years and he's always very helpful and responds very quickly. Hope this helps. Conor. |
