I used to think that the 11" blade being spun by a O.S. .46AX on my plane was dangerous and it is; however after watching some video of some of the higher performance T-Rex helis out there I am beginning to think that they could hurt someone pretty good as well. I have my first heli on order and its pretty clear that these are not toys and should be operated nowhere near people at least untill i get proficient at flying it. Just looking at pictures you would never suspect how much power and energy those little brushless motors have. just an observation...

Given roughly the same size engine, a brushless motor compared to a nitro would probably produce the same ammount of power in half the size, so yes, they're very powerful. They're also very expensive
.
The t-rex is not a very big helicopter. Being hit by the blades would probably leave some nasty bruising and some good cuts, but wouldn't be overly disastrous. Now, I wouldn't want to be hit by anything bigger than a .30 size heli, nitro or electric. THEN you're talkin some serious pain! Either way, it wouldn't be the first time someone has died from flying RC helis. There was a post not even a few days ago just on this subject if it interests you.

Thought I would share my OOP's, Day one of my new Blade CP and me being well versed in the fixed wing and car world, well you know I new everything and could fly this little "TOY" without any problem, Well as you can imagine it didnt work out like that, I increased the throttle and the heli lifted off and SMACK right into my left leg,,, and it hurt (pride and leg) well nothing but a good bruise and a small cut (and a new set of blades)......Well that is as much pride I can swallow for one night,

I know what you mean. Too windy to fly the helis today so I flew my brushless P51...right into myself while trying to land. the wing smacked me in the head as it went by and started spinning like heli blades until it hit the ground. i couldn't stop laughing. the people coming out of church must have thought i did it on purpose.
picked it up and did another go around with a much better landing.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER IN A TREX.
The T-rex is perfectly capable of being lethal. It is NOT a toy.
Extreme caution should be used while flying any model helicopter....INCLUDING the electric ones.

Agreed, its just not something here mentioned a lot. With the prices of high performance r/c models coming down all the time, more and more people will start to buy them, Thats why I think its important to stress the safety issue. I saw a video in the "crashed" thread the other day of a large .60 or .90 size bird crashing from just a few feet off the ground and the thing just beat itself to death. The engine would not stall and the rotor would not break, it just pounded the ground running around in a circle untill something in the drive train finally let go.

When flying small electrics make sure that when you run into a 4 year old that they don't get mad and stomp on your toy afterwards.
