they don't
here is the way I break it down.... if you are looking for a really good stable hovering helicopter...you will mostly fly circuits.. and the majority of your flying is indoors, then the Shogun is perfect....
if you will fly more outdoors, and will be really wringing it out with some serious 3D flying, then the Trex is your bird...
either is capable, they just do different things....
IMHO

the trex XL is bigger, heavier, and more stable. it is a Monster of a machine for a heli. replacement parts come in bulk low cost. the trex is good for 3d because it has a VERY aggressive collective and cyclic control.
the shogun is a lightweight 400class heli. a bit outdated in design and the shogun is fragile with a $10 hollow mainshaft and a pretty expensive and very soft tail boom. i would not get a shogun unless you get it really really cheap and that's pretty hard to beat a trex xl's super low price right now. the shogun cannot come close to the trex's reliability out of the box.

$$%^%**!!! [:@] Now you tell me... I have 1 Shogun with a few hop-ups and 1 Zoom for spare parts and a lot of replacement parts. I was thinking of going with the 25 amp speed controller and the brushless motor next. I do however have 2 carring cases for the T-Rex...I guess I'll get the T-Rex when I learn to fly really good, So far, I'm really good at crashing. (hence, the extra spare parts) hehehe
