EDF surging
#1
Guys,
I have an E Flite Delta-V 15 69 mm unit with the BL15 Ducted Fan Brushless Motor, 3600Kv. I am using a CC ICE 50 ESC. Today was the first flite and although it gave plenty of power there was a surging between 60 and 80% throttle. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

My Feedback: (15)
never ran that particular set up, so grain of salt included:
possible problems,
1 battery capacity too low, either or both MAH or "C" value
2 underrated ESC, as in try 60 amp
3 overheating of ESC, move it to where there is airflow over it.
have you test run it it with a test meter to verify full load value of volts, amps, and maybe a temp reading on the ESC.
good luck

OK, I looked over the Castle site and did an update on the Firmware for the ICE 50 ESC. Also went through the set up and found that the motor information was incorrect for the number of poles. The E Flite BL 15, 3600 Kv motor is a purpose built motor for the Delta-V 15 69mm fan unit. It is a 6 pole inrunner. I had this setting as a normal 14 pole outrunner. I think this could have caused some of the surge problem. Also checked the cutoff settings, I had the cutoff current set to sensitive at 50 amps so I moved this to the normal setting of 60 amps (should not be a problem cause we don't have prop strikes). I hope to fly this week some time and will report on the results. Anyone have any other ideas to check please post.

I have the same problem with my "X-29", on the full stick, in my case due to the ESC not adequate for the amp thirsty motor. In your case if it's not batteries the ESC struggles to deliver the current. Check your current draw.

I went through the CC ESC settings and found that I had the pole count for the motor had the default setting of 14, the E-Flite BL 15 inrunner motor is a 6 pole motor. I also set the timing to 6 (to match the number of poles), the PWM to 8 Khz (the normal default, it was at 12 KHz for aircraft); Governor gain set to 18 (just above the low setting).
Does anyone have the ESC setting that are used for EDF's in the various ESC's?

The application is a purpose built EDF controlling stunt model. The first flight was very surprising. Everything I was worried about such as not enough smooth take-off runway, stalling the EDF fan, touchy controls, none of them happened. It took off in the same length as a normal Fox 35 powered stunt ship, had plenty of power and felt strong on the lines. Only issue was the motor surging, once I get that resolved this is going to be great.

OK success today!!! After going through the input information in the CC ICE 50 ESC; correcting the cutoff amps to "normal (60)" for sensitive (50) (which I think is the default setting as I never changed it since I hooked it up); correcting the motor data to the correct pole count of 6 (this is a purpose designed inrunner from E-Flite for this fan unit) and setting the timing and gain to the normal default levels. Flew it today and it spooled up smoothly and held rpm solid. From the data logger info in the ICE ESC the rpm was constant at 34546 and the amp draw at speed was 33.1. The ship flew smooth but a tad slow so I will move the rpm up to 38000 for the next flight. All good so far, once I get the speed up a bit I will see what maneuvers it can do (hope it will do the Old Time Stunt pattern).
