Default Cheap SU-27 pusher Conversion to Brushless

Here is a conversion I did with an SU-27. It was a cheap kids toy RC plane that I got for $9.95 + shipping from Ebay. It used two motors that would stear by turning one or the other off in flight and no actual flight controls. I gutted all the cheap, I MEAN CHEAP, internal electronics and in its place I put a Himax 2025-5300 brushless motor w/ a 3x3 DD GWS prop. I then put two micro servos and CF control rods to control the elevators in elevon configuration. The ESC is a CC Pheonix 25 with a Kokam 11.1v 910mAh lipo. AUW is 9.5 oz and I obtained the CG by setting up the original config and locating the CG. I reinforced it structurally with packing tape on the leading edges and trailing edges along with some on the main fuse. I haven't maidened it yet due to bad weather but I thought I'd post some pics before I destroy her on her maiden. I have mixed expectations because If I she flies nicely on the maiden AND I manage not to totally destroy her, I will have to get a duplicate setup for my coming Concrusher for which this set up was originally intended.

2 questions, will that motor spin that prop on 11.1V without pulling to many watts? And second, where did you get those control rods and fittings? They look like what comes with the shockflyers and I'd like to get some.

Good looking plane for a few bucks. Let us know how it works.

The combo I'm using was intended for a Concrusher except the Concrusher uses a TP 3S 2100 rated at 12C. I'm using a Kokam 3S 910 that is rated at 15C so I think I'll be ok. I dont plan on doing a lot of full throttle as it would probably fly beyond the capabilities of the wing. If you've ever seen a Concrusher on a Himax 2025-5300, TP3S1P 2100, CC25, and GWS 3x3 prop direct drive...it's a sight to see. It was clocked at over 105 mph on a level pass. Those weigh in at 14 oz. while this SU27 only weighs 9.5 oz. You know the saying...Even a brick can fly if you give it enough power. Well, this "Toy" has plenty of power. According to my electric motor calculator, this setup will produce 19.9 oz. static thrust and 8 oz. of in flight thrust. Today, I will just chuck it and see.

Oh, and yes, those are rods from my SU27 Shock flyer...Good eye!! I tried to get a set but couldn't find any so I just barrowed them from my Shock Flyer. I bought a set of rods but will have to apoxy the fittings in the future.

Duh.....NOW I see the 3 X 3 prop size I didn't know there was such a thing as a 3X3. Is that a press fit on the shaft?

It's a GWS press-on prop. I had to slightly drill it out but had to make sure it was still snug. I then sanded the shaft a bit and put a tiny bit of thin CA into the prop hole and gently pressed it on. Once on, I gave it a small spray of ZAP. Again, these were the instructions that came with the Concrusher so at least I knew it would work. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the maiden this afternoon after work.

Thats a pretty monstrous A10!!

OK. I'll get one to try. I'm going to try my new combo this afternoon as well,....as soon as the wind dies down. A Stryker with a HiMax 2815/2000, TP3S2100 pack and an 8X6 prop. Started with a 6X4 and was only drawing 8 amps. The 8X6 gives me 23 amps.

Holy Cow...It flew AWSOME!!!! The Himax 2025-5300 just screems. I threw it at nearly full throttle into the wind and it just screamed almost out of sight without a single wobble. I had to get some serious altitude so I could trim it. Once trimmed, it was a serious thrill. I didn't go full throttle because it got small REAL FAST and looked pretty awsome. I took it on a dive at 1/2 throttle and pulled up to see how it took some serious G's. It looked like the wings flexed so I landed her by cutting the throttle. Man, did it glide smoothly. I was pumped. After and inspection of the wings, it turned out that the wings took the G's just fine so I decided to launch again even though the wind picked up but like an idiot, I launched it across the wind so there was a SERIOUS crosswind. It started out ok but a gust caught it and swung the wing causing it to roll upside down. I was in the process of pulling up so as it rolled, it went down and crashed straight onto its nose....CRASH!! I broke the soft nose piece off and broke it again at the canopy resulting in three pieces. When I got home, I epoxied the nose back on, patched up the gaps with a mix of apoxy and foam, and epoxied the repaired piece onto the fuse. A little paint and it'll be good to go.

Lessons learned:
5 minute Epoxy is my friend
NEVER launch into a crosswind no matter how excited you are
Himax 2025-5300 + 11.1v 910mAh lipo + CC25 + 3x3 DD prop is an AWSOME combo for a 9-15 oz. pusher jet (VERY FAST)

Pics of the repaired SU27

I may buy another fuse for a spare because although short, the first flight was impressive.

BTW,
After the crash, I flew my Mega 16/15/4 equipped Stryker. I swear that the $34 (plane + shipping) SU27 flew better than the modded Stryker. I Think I found my new love affair.
