I need Expert Help!
I'm building a flying wing 42", I have a phoenix 45 speed controller. I would like to know what combination of brushless motor and battery that would give me optimum performance, the prop, cannot have a diameter large them 7 inch. Please Help!!

RE: I need Expert Help!
I have one of the original flying wings, the ZAGIXL or some such meaningless designation. Anyway, it has a 48" wing span and was powered by a junk 6v sp400 motor, a reverse mounted Gunther "spoon" prop (125mmx110mm) and an 8 cell NiCd pack. IIRC, the ESC was a 20 amp model. The AUW was about 20 oz with 75 watts
I have no way of measuring speed but that combination pushed that wing around with as much performance as I could want. Loops, rolls, inverted flight - all easily performed. Not much vertical but it looked like 60~70 mph coming out of a dive.
Keep it light and you won't need much power, even for "good" performance.
I don't think these are worth the cost of a brushless motor but that's just me. Since you already have the Phoenix 45, look at a MEGA 16/15/3 or an HET-3W. Both are sp 400 size and very light. Any of the new out-runners would work as well but since you are limited in prop size, the need for a lot of torque is not a factor.
For a battery, I'd use a 3S1P LiPo as the current draw will be around 20 amps.
Don't forget to mount the prop "backwards"
