IIyshin IL-62 Very Large EDF airliner
While I wait for more parts for my 123% f-14, I am ready to start my new project the Russian IIyshin IL-62 (1/16th scale). I will start to post photos soon on progress, however right now I am trying to see if anyone else has built one and if they have any detailed photos that they are willing to share of their project as this of course will be all scratch built, but hey, if someone else has invented the wheel why try and re-invent it
My plane will have a span of 106 inches or 2.7 meters a length of 131 inches or 3.32 meters a wing area of 1693 sq inches or 109.2 dm squared and the projected weight will be around 20 lbs it will have four edf's (schubler ds30-3ph) they will produce 4lbs of thrust each (16lbs total for the mathematically challenged ) at 50k rpm, I will use 5-s lipo packs (times 4) with castle creation sc (times 4). If anyone has any comments about this please chime in prior to me putting too much more time into this I am thinking that I will also have a full compliment of lights thinking about a scale cockpit as well as passengers in the main cabin ( too over zealous maybe?) and it will have retracts with sequencing doors. Colour scheme to be determined.
Nevertheless, if anyone has any comments suggestions or photos please post them here as I am very excited about continuing my work on my big bird.
Thanks in advance

IS this from the Rauch plan and kit? I am currently building the 727. The fiberglas parts are excellent. The plans leave a lot of planning on your part to make everything fit and work correctly. He does not make any engine recommendations nor show their installation. Since mine is going turbine, I would see where the EDF would actually be a little easier to do. There will be a huge amount of room for batteries and the nacelles he provides are very sturdy and light.
Keep us posted, I would love to see your progress.

Yes this is from Norbert, he did a special set of fiberglass parts for me .... making them extra lite for the use for an edf. And you are also correct in that alot of thinking has to be done as how to fabricate all the parts. How goes the work on your plane? Do you have any photos fo the build and/or any suggestions?
Thanks

RE: IIyshin IL-62 Very Large EDF airliner
So far all I have accomplished has been part of the rear of the plane. That is where most of the action is taking place. The design of the 727 is such that I wish to use one turbine (24# thrust). The 727 has two nacelles to the side and the support for these nacelles runs right thru the space where the engine should sit in the rear. This required a lot of "thinking" and innovation in order to get a place to mount my engine. Then the question of access arises, so I have fabricated a hatch just below the engine which when I finish will be removeable allowing access to the engine in case of an emergency. The fully moveable tailplane will be fixed at 0 degrees and functional elevators utilized. Again, fabrication for the servo actuator has to be made and I want full confidence in its integrity before I "button" up the rear of the plane. The foam fuselage and wings have been cut, but not sheeted yet. I am contemplating having the fuse laser cut and then built it up, but I am aways from that point right now. I have not taken many pics along the way, I spent too much time with glue on my fingers to mess with my camera. I am using the HAWE retracts and they are superb.
I would love to see your work and correspond with you along the way on your build. I am a big airliners fan.

How much if you don't mind me asking where the retracts ... and how did you contact them to order them? I would like to get a set for my plane as well. And I look forward to seeing your progress and keeping you aprised of mine.

They were around $400, if I remember correctly. and you can get there from a link on Norbert's website. The guys does not speak much English, but he has a translator who helped him. It does require wire transfer similar to Norbert. His shipping was spot on the projected date. Very robust and look like they will hold up well.
I have something you might be interested in. I recently acquired a set of custom drawings and a partially built 1:10 scale 747. Way too big for me, but it might be possible to scale it down to 1:16 or smaller. I have a partially built set of scale landing gear which I want replicated in smaller form. I would love to see this thing built and flown, and electric might be the key, if you are interested in a joint project when you finsh your IL-62. We can talk about it sometime if you sih, send me your number and I will call you when I get time.

Large is a probelm. At 1:10 scale the wingspan is a little over 20 feet. It would require the cash reserve of some thrid world countries just to buy the lipos for that thing, not to mention a semi to carry it to the field. Right now it is in my garage and the two fuse pieces are almost 8 feet long each....LOL
I think 1:16 scale would be more manageable, even 1:20 scale would be large.

Got your PM, will call you soon.

I started to cut foam tonight ... lots of foam ... Still have not heard anything from the Hawe Retract people, even though I have sent them two e-mails so far.[>:] I will start posting photos soon.

Such a beautiful and huge airplane. I am looking very forward to seeing this as an EDF model, our conversations have defintely sparked my interest, however I am ptretty far into my turbine version of the 727. Hopefully I will make more progress soon.

I am sure you will best of luck to you ... I am stalled a bit so cutting foam while I wait for the motors and fans to come in ...total cost for motors and fans 2k ... next I will order the speed controlers and batteries. I am going to build my own landing gear for it wish me luck .

RE: IIyshin IL-62 Very Large EDF airliner
Finally I have started working on the IL-62. The motors and fans finally came in , I have ordered some parts to make the landing gear and for now I will start to build the cockpit. What I have done so far is just a simple cardboard cutout to get things to the correct height and size and then I will start doing a lot of carving and painting not to mention adding lots and lots of gages :-( I am thinking that it will take about a month or so to complete. Also I have made cut outs for the windows, I will make a mold of them and then place some lexan in a vacuume to form the windows. However, I will also work on other portions of the plane along with my friend Tony.

first off, i know nothing about r/c planes, but i do know a thing or two about real life ones, so i know that the gear of the 727 (single main gear) is different from the il-62 (twin main gear) i would hate you create a slightly imperfect model (as it looks awesome already) so here is a decent pic of an il-62, showing landing gear.

Update ... holiday slow down but should get back on track now. Just FYI all of the trailing edges are carbon fiber [X(] makes for a nice stiff, but not too stiff wing. Working on LG and thrust revers fabrication now, once LG is done I think things will move more quickly. The only real problem after that is the TR ... I saw a post where someone else is doing it ... I have asked if they would send me drawings so I could copy it ... not sure if they will or not. Will keep you posted.
