Default Easy Tiger 101mm F-86 w/ pics! Now video!!

Hey everyone. Here is a shot of my Easy Tiger F-86 Sabre. 50 inch span, fiberglass fuse and built-up wing and tails. Tails are fully sheeted, wings have open bays. It is nearly ready to go, just waiting on a motor. I will be using 2 3S 3,700 mAh packs in series with an 80amp esc for starters. Quality is very nice and the build was very easy. I did substitute a couple of clevises and put in a beefier nose gear, since I fly off of a grass field. It is remarkably light, weighing in at 3.5 pounds with all 6 servos and a receiver in it. All up weight, approx: 3.5lb+1lb 7oz (batts), 6oz (101mm Easy Tiger fan), 13oz (Feigao 540 motor)=6.12 pounds. Add a couple of ounces for the esc, thrust tube, etc. It is set up for fixed gear at the moment, but if it flies as good as I hope it does, I plan on fitting retracts as well as glassing the wings/tail and finishing it as on of the Dayglo Sabres with some Flitemetal! Will post more pics when I get the motor! -Chris

Cool. Yeah, still waiting on the motor. Both BP Hobbies and myself reside in NJ, so hopefully I will have it soon.

Hello all,

Does anyone know where else you can purchase this jet? I absolutely refuse to send EasyTiger a dime. So, I'd like to find another vendor.

Damned signature required packages! My motor is sitting at the Post Office....mocking me. So tomorrow evening I am hoping to install it and check some power system numbers. I will post some pics of the installation. -Chris

Well got the motor. Mounted it to the fan (bolt pattern was exact), and did a quick run up just to check it. At about 3/4 or so throttle (I was holding the fan unit) I was getting a reading of about 1,400 watts on my 6S setup which was not fully charged. Amps were about 40 to 50 on an 80 amp Turnigy Plush ESC. I didn't want to go any further because I did not feel like losing fingers. Hopefully I will get it installed in the plane tonight to get a real power rating.

Dw crash... I recommend NOT buying anything from banana hobby. I say this because of all the reviews on it state the poor customer service and risk of buying something that does not include some number of things due to banana hobby's "typo." If you get your product and there is something wrong with it, there is basically no hope for refund or exchange. Thats just my 10 cents.

Ok, Feigao 540 9XL is installed with the thrust tube. 80 amp ESC is mounted in the tube for cooling, however the thrust pushing on the wires wants to deform the thrust tube....any ideas on how to fix this? It will need cooling one way or the other. 1500+ watts at 60 amps with fresh batts and it sure is loud. Maiden hopefully this weekend. -Chris

Found a pic of someone else's setup on the forums where the ESC is zip tied to it's own wires behind the motor...it is suspended and does not touch the thrust tube. Did that and has alleviated the problems. Also cools the ESC better since it has airflow all over it. My 2 3S 3700 packs fit perfect on each side of the front fuse right behind the nose intake, and the F-86 c.g.'s just right with them. I am curious to see how long (short?) flight times will be with these packs. Larger packs might need some plywood former alterations.

dw crash, I am not sure where to get an exact model of the easy tiger except from that company itself. If you are looking for maybe a different size and material, not to mention cheeeep, you could check out nitro planes. You could also check out ducted fans.com, but it is quit pricy. http://www.ductedfans.com/jets_electric_f86mm_90mm.html . You could also check out this one from ducted fans also, once again, its quit pricy. http://www.ductedfans.com/jets_electric_F_86_120mm.html Hope I was a bit of help.

Detour747.

Thanks for the info, I'll check it out. Easytiger is just a flip-distributor, there must be a Hong Kong source or another US distributor. I find it hard to believe the manufacturer would give an exclusive to anyone. They normally don't.....

Well she is ready to go. All up weight is right about what was specified (6.5 pounds), maybe a little less with my 6S setup. Figuring about 230 watts per pound, I hope it moves. I hear these Feigao's are not all that efficient (albeit inexpensive) so I may replace it later with a Neu or similar. Here is a pic of the fan/esc and one of the battery layout. That silver sheet under the fan is some poster board I found in an arts and crafts store. No tube is provided for the nose, so this piece I made covers all the servo wires so as not to get sucked into the fan. I also made a partial tube from the nose to the first former. I don't know if this will make any aerodynamic difference, but it does make it look better. -Chris

Hi All,

This f-86 would be sweet with the Kolibri micro turbine.

In the giant scale section there is a thread for a 257" B-36. In page 14 of the thread about 3post down there is a video showing the engine in a stryker sized plane. The post was for mounting four of these in the engine pods of this giant B-36.

I couldnt believe it but in one of the videos, it showed the pilot starting his turbine inside his Minivan with the exhaust pointed toward the interior of his vehicle! Thats nuts.

Just a neat thought for this bird.

Hey. Well I wasn't going to maiden it today, but went ahead anyway because everyone wanted to see it go. Had to contend with 15 to 20 mph gusts and had to take off from the road next to our field. Our field is still wet and soggy. Anyway, after a few taxi runs to trim the nose gear, I went for it. Take off roll was not bad at all on the road and it got airborne in about 100 feet or so. Had my hands full for a moment trying to trim it out, as it wanted to roll right and dive a tad. I probably should have balanced it laterally. However, once trimmed I enjoyed the heck out of it! It flies very nicely, and is super stable. With the cheap Feigao motor I have in it, performance is good, but not great. I would say it did an honest 80 mph in level, full throttle flight. Good vertical, but not unlimited. When I noticed power start to wane, I brought it in. Nice low speed handling, although I used all the up-elevator I had to flair. I think it is just a bit nose heavy, so I might try putting a half ounce of lead under the thrust tube for next time. So, I am very impressed. It has a lot of potential, and definitely needs retracts. It could really scream with a high dollar Neu or Hacker, I just need to figure out which one I need. Phil: it does not come with intake ducting. I made a partial duct behind the nose and another half piece to cover all my servo wires. You could easy make one though, as all the bulkheads have round cut outs.

I am hoping to get some flight video next weekend, as today was extremely windy and I left the Sabre at home, and flew my Seagull Harrier instead. Anyone have retract suggestions? I was looking at the retracts and struts from Electric Jet Factory for the Fly Fly F-86, since it is similar in size and weight.

Hello gents,

I just found the place to purchase these jets. www.Hero-Models.com sells these and other get products. You can avoid the middleman. Can't beat that.

I have known Curtis for a long time, and have had many dealings with him, never a problem. I have visited many Chinese factory with him, and he takes his business seriously , and Chinese respect him. Many planes from him are exclusive to his company, and it is not true what you said about Chinese not giving exclusivity. He does not run his business in his garage, he has a warehouse outside of New York, I have seen his garage, it is full of cars, no planes. If you do not want to order from him, okay, actually you did find a Chinese company that has the same product that he sells, well I can tell you that I have a long experience in China and it'll work like that:
You buy form that company (prices are good) but you forgot that you have to wire transfer the money and bank will charge you $ 45.00 for each transfer does not matter the amount to be transferred, Chinese companies does not accept credit cards, then you have to pay the shipping charges, and when your plane get here will be more expensive than if you bought from the middleman that brings in quantity. Now let's say that you have a problem with the plane, what you are going to do, send it back? forget it the shipping back to China is 3 times expensive than from China to whatever place they send, I don't believe that you will have another free plane from them aether , and last you will need to speak Chinese or at least a little "Chenglesh", well when we go to China we always have to hire a translator.
In the end does not worthy all the effort to buy direct.

Wagner,

That's true....But, I'd trust the chinese chaps before Curtis. Remember, Curtis probably only treats you well because he needs and uses you. I'd pay double not to deal with Easy Tiger Models. The more you defend him the less likely I am to every deal with your firm. Your products and prices are good, but a friend of Curtis is no friend of mine!!!!

Any suggestions on retracts for this bird? Dw_crash: You have stated your opinion about Curtis, so please leave it at that. I want to keep this thread about the plane itself. That link of yours does not work, by the way. I have no issues with Curtis, and would recommend him....but if you don't think so either buy the plane somewhere else or don't buy it at all. That simple.
