Long or Short shaft Ryobi ?

The cheaper ones are usually always short shaft.
The reason for the long shaft is to make room for a centrifugal clutch.
The cheap ones have no clutch and the head is a direct drive.
Mine was a real old one and the clutch was down at the cutter head. (It had a clutch but was a short shaft version.)
Enjoy,
Jim

you can usually tell by trying to turn the head of the weedwacker by hand. if it turns easily it has the clutch and therefore the long shaft. if it turns hard like you are actually turning the piston, then it is the short shaft version.

I am looking at the engines on the internet so I can't turn them over to check. About all I can do is go by the model number. I have looked in Home Depot and Lowes hardware but they do not have them. I looked at Harbor Freight but they do not sell them here in California.
Thanks

The 705 appears to have a clutch. Don't know about the 765, it's not listed.

The long shaft is easier to convert.
The hub is not threaded. It has a clearance hole for 3/8"
The original 3/8" nut holds the prop, hub, and flywheel.
By theory, it is possible to use a shorter hub with a long shaft engine than a short shaft one. On the short one, your hub has to be long enough to have 5/16" holding threads for studs front and rear.
Enjoy,
Jim

I have both the long and the short shaft. Converting is about the same execpt for the prop adapter. I prefer the long shaft over the short shaft. With the short shaft you have to thread the prop adaper on then put the prop then the bolt to hold on the prop. With the long shaft you put all on then tighten the nut like you would a glow engine.
