I have a homelite 45cc engine converted to rc. I am running it on the magneto flywheel setup with 30 to1 mix gas 87 octane. A friend of mine is intrested in converting one to put on a funfly type plane but he was concerned with the throttle lag from idle to full throttle transition. He said most of the gas engine from the hobby shops have a very quick throttle response compared to my engine. I am getting 7650 rpms with a 20x8 mas prop static. Any ideas why this engine has the lag? The tuning is fine as the transition is clean with no brubles or anything like that.
I told him that maybe loosing the flywheel and installing an electronic igniton would solve the problem. will it?

The weight of the flywheel along with the fixed timing along with the Master Airscrew= slow spool-up time. I think you will benefit by changing one or all mentioned.

Twostroker is right but one more thing you might want to try. If you have a computer radio that allows expo on the throttle try adding a little there. I use this same engine and I think I have around 30% in mine. This engine rev's its quickest after 1/2 throttle and we have to keep in mind that it wont react as fast as we can move our thumb. By slowing the throttle down a little on the lower end the engine has a little more time to react to the fuel coming in and is not as bad to lag. It wont completely solve the nature of this beast but is a lot cheaper!! What ever you decide good luck and keep us posted!!

If it is slow it might be a little rich. Then again the speed to 7000 rpm is just a little shy of a .46 going from 2000 to 14000 now if you compared it to a .46 spooling to 7000 then yes it will seem kind off slow.
