Hi,
I blew out a Ryobi, to where it would do 8,000 RPM with an 18X6. One key was porting the intake and making a much larger reed valve.
I used the metal off a floppy disk for this... works well... Any other sources of reed valves? (carbon, fiberglass???) I would like to experiment...
thx
Tim

I wonder if the disc material itself from a "floppy disk" would make good reed material. The problem with metal reeds is that if they fatigue and break, it's going to hurt the engine; often "big time". Stainless steel is probably best if you're going to use metal.
What all did you do to the engine re: porting?
Thanks,

porting: I opened up the carby and manafold about 25%.... in a trumpet shape into the back of the engine. The reed needed to be much larger than OEM... too much power for the crank in this motor...
I also shaved the head and opened the top of the carby, blew open the exhaust... too much work

I have a Poulan 75cc and a Homelite 80 cc that came from chainsaws. Both have what appears to be laminated fiberglass reed valves. You might try to get some from a dealer. I'm sure you could reshape them to fit your needs.

good idea. I have to pick up a carb rebuild kit so I think I will do this.
also, may try laminating carbon fiber ribbon... see what that comes out like ;-)
I have had great luck tinkering with this little motor...
Thx for the suggestion.
