You can buy a new 30cc complete block assembly with out the Flywheel-mag and the carb spacer - carb and muffler for around $75 at the chainsaw place. Then the carb is $40 and the Flywheel is $40 and the Mag is $40 etc. But if you have an worn out 25 doner engine it's no big deal?
Enjoy,

jboy, I convert weed wacker and chainsaw engines for aircraft and most others that do to will tell you we wont give much for'em. I dont but used weed wackers at yard sales, I find enough people that when I tell them what I do with the engines they offer me all types of them for free. I have a whole garage full of "give'me" engines. I would buy "new" ones for the simple fact that they are new. The cost of converting the type of engine you have would be about $40-$50 depending on how much work you can do for yourself. So to most flyers I know that like to use "weeddie" motors your might get 40-60 bucks. As far as parts go.. I buy new carbs on ebay all week for $10 that retail for 40 or more. It would be tough to part out the motor for more money.

I was so glad to see this thread. I am still fairly new to R/C aviation, and a long ways from flying a giant-scale, mostly due to cost. The first question I had for the experienced Giant-Scale pilots at our filed was, Why they were paying so much for gas engines instead of using weedeaters motors and such, Simple: Not enough RPMS, they said., and made sense, but was sure it could be done, and glad to know it can. Also am very interested into knowing how. Flywheel? Stroked blocked?

jboy, 150 for three, eh? ouch...I've been wrong before but I cant see you breaking even. I have a homelite 25cc and its very smooth runner. havent got it tweeked yet but was turning a wood 16x6 at 6500 on stock carb (very small) and baffeled muffler. I expect to get it up to 7400 rpm with a bigger carb and removing the baffels from the muffler. I would like to get a 30cc homey but I wouldnt give much for one new. Used ones work fine. The guts are tough and unless someone ran it without 2-cycle mix in the gas its unlikely to be worn out. Matrix...I've got some pics for ya. How bout a airplane for a ryobi 31cc motor that turns a APC 18x8 wide blade prop at 7600 rpm? It was a free motor with a few tricks that cost nothing to do, a $10 bigger carb off ebay $35 worth of coversion parts form www.wackerengines.com and to top it off, Its on $25 worth of plane built from Home Depot...13lbs +/- hangs on the prop long enough to do one torque roll sound to ya..take a look... hey John, Well, I get used engines gave to me mostly and the engines arent generaly hurt in any way just whatever they were in, trimmers blowers, chain saws and the like have been broken in some way but the motor is fine. When one converts these motors the first thing to go is the carb and sometimes the muffler too. Some people are buying new homelite and ryobi trimmers for $70 or more from wal-mart and for as little as $50 from harbor freight. For me, since I have to put a larger carb on them anyway why buy it new if I can get good used ones gave to me and spend the money on a larger carb? This becomes the problem you may run into trying to sell your motors and get at least $50 out of them. Many people that buy the new trimmer are removing the motor and selling the leftovers on ebay for 30-40. There earning most of there money back this wayand ending up with that almost free motor thats new.Look around a bit and youll find them doing this on ebay. If you fully convert the engines you have for aircraft use and have them really ready to fly I would think you might get up to $100 for them a peice but it depends on who happends to see them on ebay. I would try to sell them as is first. Heck John, the reason people convert these engines anyway is because we dont want to spend any money and really like tinkering on this stuff. You can bet if I was making all kinds of money I would buy high end gas motor made for the hobby and just bolt them on and enjoy the no hassel power right out'a the box.

Hi Matrix
Go to www.rcfaq.com and read "engine conversion" also the nice links they have great site , good knowledge.
also www.carrprecision.com
Joe Guzzardi have a site like "How to teach a weedwhacker to fly" I believe, make a search, good site to convert a Ryobi type engine.
I like the site www.rsengines.net/index.html
Good site , good photos.
I am working in a Fokker Eindecker 1/4 scale with a Homelite 38 chainsaw converted from Model Aviation magazine a Dick Sarpolus plan, very easy to make , and the BETTER , the plane use standard servos with a 42 cc engine .
Good luck , get in touch with modelers operating gas engines , you can see the diference
Hasta la vista

I think you have a fairly good chance of breaking even. I bought my Homie 30cc weedwacker when Home Depot was clearancing them out a while ago for - guess what - $50. The dual-ring Homie 30cc is getting rarer and rarer to get and it's a better engine than the single-ring 25cc Homie. For this reason, there is certainly a demand for the 30cc, and DEMAND is what sells stuff.
That said, don't think you'll make out like a bandit with these thing though.
The dual-ring Ryobi 31cc typically sells for about $50 as well. So you do have competition.
FWIW, I would buy a brand new 30cc Homie for $50 if I didn't have mine already.
Good luck.

Sure....Try one and see what happends....I've been trying to deside if I want to try to buy one from ya for $50. But that would depend if you want to let one go for that or try to score a better sale on ebay. Let me know. Mike
