<xml>Well this is my first post, I have been reading this forum for a long time, it is a library for engine converters. This is my third conversion, but my first gas glow. I was reading the gas/glow thread, and just had to give it a try. I am using the recommended setup, OS four stroke plug and 10/10 glow fuel mixed with two parts gas. The engine is a echo 16cc that has been put on a diet. In the pictures you can see a mounting plate, I am going to remove that and use some standoff bolts to further save weight. I changed the stock carb out for a larger one, gutted the muffler and added a velocity stack. The cylinder is stock no mods. Right now this engine turns a 13x8 at 7200. Has anyone else converted this engine before? If so, what rpm did you get. Wondering how I am doing on power. I will have get the degree wheel out and look at the port timings to see if they can be improved Thanks again for all the people who developed and experimented the gas/glow concept. It has been a fun and rewarding project, and cheap to which is good when you are a kid on a budget. I converted one of those many years ago before we all started with the Gas/Glow concept. I just ran it on gasoline with a CH Ignition system on it. I can't remember what the rpms were, but it flew a 10 lb. airplane fairly well. Not the way overpowered, 3D type power by any means, but it flew and could do aerobatics.

I do a lot of 21 to 26cc Echo engines, as well as Homelites, Stihl, etc. Any time I can, (which you can with all the small Echo engines), I just use studs in the back of the engine and mount it directly to the firewall to save weight.

By the way, I know the little 16cc engine is cute, but the 21 and 24cc Echo engines only weigh slightly more, but make a lot more power. All the Echo engines I have converted to Gas/Glow worked out very well.

Me again.... I just went back and checked my posts about that Echo 16cc engine I built years ago. I got 7000 rpms on an APC 15 x 8 prop with it, without doing any porting. So, you are definitely down on power. Check the ring gap. It should be no more than .003" for best performance, and I bet you find yours is much wider. As you probably know from your studying of the forum, you can get a high quality ring for it from Frank Bowman for about $11.00. That will perk it right up! Besides more power, you will find that it starts easier and handles better overall with a good ring seal.

Also, if you aren't using an electric starter, be careful and note that sometimes on a hand start using Gas/Glow, the engine will start and run backwards. Nothing to it, you just stop the engine and re-start it, but it could catch you by surprise if you didn't know to watch for the possibility of it happening.

I use a starter so it always starts in the right direction. It can hand start, just got to make sure you give it a good flip. I will check the ring gap. I have another echo engine, I am not sure of the displacemennt though. Does anyone know what this engine is? I have a couple engines that could use some new rings. I have heard a lot of good things about Bowman rings. Does anyone have his contact info. Thanks

That is certainly a cute looking little engine there. I like it. I haven't seen one of the little 16cc engines in a long time now. If I remember correctly, the little 16cc engine was used in a small compact ultra lightweight trimmer tool that i think they quit making. I think everything has gone larger on the engine displacements nowadays. But if you have one go for it they work fairly well. Many years ago we used to convert trimmer engines, etc to glow engines for using with larger planes. At the time the largest RC engine you could get was a Fox .78 or a OS Max .80. So if you wanted a big airplane to fly you had to convert something over for RC plane use. OS eventually saw the popularity forming up and came out with the .91 engine and it was a big success. But around that same time the Quadra gas engines came out and they were hugely popular too.

I agree Earl, those little 16cc engines are "cute", but not all that powerful for their weight. I have a Stihl 16cc engine that is a pig in the weight department. If I had a smaller crankcase, I'd bolt the jug onto it. My 16cc Stihl weighs more than twice what my ST S90 weighs.

That looks like an older 21cc engine to me.

The Echo engines usually have a decal on the block, stating a model number. A "2000" or "2100" is a 21cc engine, a "2400" is a 23.6cc engine, a "2500" is a 25cc, etc. The older 23.6cc engines are the best, but they all run well.

If you don't have a decal for some reason, you can easily measure the bore and stroke and then use this formula:

(bore x bore) x stroke) x .7854 = displacement

If you measure in inches, that will provide you with the cubic inches of the engine. If you want to know the "cc", just divide the cubic inch result by .061 to get "cc's".
