Just got back into RC after 15 years(old pattern flyer), thought I'd return to what I really liked about this hobby...Scale. So I built a topflight giant scale p47(I know its fun scale) and bought a US 41 for it (they used it on the proto model)
Just about everything I read about this combo says it flys it ok but needs more power(mine will weight 20 pounds rtf)
Everything I've read here is positive about the Poulan 46 and I'm thinking about trying a conversion if there is will be an increase in power over the US 41...any info will be helpful....TIA Doc

you will need the poop of a g-62 check out the stihl 56cc 029 engine or the stihl 039 64cc at 3 lbs bare the 039 is a bored out 029 so both weigh the same.

The Poulan 46 will add power and save some weight if converted properly. Mine with a CH ignition is a huge increase over my old Q-42.
If you can get a 50cc Poulan, that will be even better as it is athe same size.
Ralph (RCIGN1) and CH Ignitions will sell conversion kits. Ralph will do a nice job. We have both RCIGN and CH conversions here. Both run great.
You can also add electronic ignition to your '41. It will save a bit of weight and add a little power. But most warbirds need the nose weight anyway.

Doc, the US41 should fly the P-51, at 20lbs, very scale like. You won't be trying to hover the WWII fighter, so excess power would not be a necessity, just a nicety.
Since you've already got the US41, I'd say go ahead and use it. The Poulan 46cc is an excellent conversion engine, but I'n not sure the side exhaust will fit inside P-51's narrow nose even if a wrap-around Pitts muffler is used. The US41 is rear exhaust and should fit much better.

I would try the US41 first since you already have it. If your P47 really comes in at 20# you should be fine. You want your plane to fly like a WW2 plane not a jet. Then get the Poulen and convert it. If you're not happy with the US 41 in the P47 you can swap engines and use the 41 for your next project. That's what I would do.

Thanks everybody for the help...I'll try the US 41 first while I look around for a good price on the poulan 46 or 50...I also have plans for the Ziroli 92 inch p47 ...do you think the Poulan 50 is close to the G62 that Nick used on his p47? If so I'll try to find one....Thanks Doc

I have the G62 in my 92" Ziroli P47 and it flies it very well and in a scale-like manner. However, it does run out of steam somewhat at the top when I do a big loop. It probably could use a little more power for those big maneuvers but I'm very happy with that plane/engine combo. My P47 is 28#, which is on the light side. I don't know anything about the Poulans, but I doubt if a 50cc would fly that plane very well. If you could find a conversion that's as big or bigger than the G62, that might work.
BTW, If you're planning on building the big Ziroli P47 consider the glass fuse. It saved me a lot of time in fuselage construction. It was my first experience with a glass fuse and I'm happy with it.
