I have a Homelite XL chainsaw engine that I'd like to convert for use in an airplane. The problem is that I don't know what size the engine is. The car (Walbro) is located on the crankcase - on the bottom of the engine off on a slight angle. All 2cycl. engines I've seen the carbs are mounted on the side of the cyl.
Anyone know what size the engine may be? And, where can I get conversion parts? Is this engine worth converting?

Does it look like this? This one is from an XL-10 saw. 30cc. or 1.8 cubes. Needle bearings on the crank. Mine turns a Pro Zinger 18x8 around 6500rpm. Be careful grinding on the lower crankcase half, it's magnesium and you can start a fire very easily.

Yep, that's exactly it...
Thanks for the picture!
What did you do for a prop. shaft? What type of plane do you have this in? Any other mods I should be wary of?
Thanks again...

I never got around to putting this one in a plane. Mostly because it would take a pretty large front end to accomadate the weird carb position. With just the needle bearings on the crank, the crank would move forward and aft about 1/8 of an inch while the motor was running. I've just got better, more powerful, more compact motors in this size range. I make my own prop hubs, this one uses the common 5/16x 24 if you want to go ahead and convert yours. Personally, I'd go to Home Depot and buy a new Homellite 25 for $69.95 and convert it.

Eagle:
Have a new digicamera but havn't figured out how to get it to work on the net yet. If it doesn't have a sparkplug I'm lost. Just butchered it for light weight, the usual. I have a small lathe, mill, so I made myown prop hub adapter parts. Ch ign. Carb came off a very old mc Colough saw with an accelerator pump built into it. Will try to figure this camera out.
