Ryobi 31cc Conversion Done.. ?? Before I run it.
#1
I am about to light the Ryobi 31cc short shaft engine on the test stand for the first time- But before I do I want to be sure of a few things.
1. what is a good break in mixture and flying mixture
2. What is a good break in rpm and prop etc.
3. How long should i break it in before I fly with it.
Any help is greatly appreciated... Thanks..
Here is a pic of the intended mount point in the plane.

you should have done the break-in while it was still a weadeater
any cheap oil for air-cooled two-strokes will do. 32:1 or whatever the oil bottle says.
i think most people use an 18x6 on the ryobi. years ago i ran the 28cc ryobi with a 16x8...
you don't really need to break it in before flying. just get the needles sorted out and run it a little rich. a tach will help a lot.

Put it in the airplane, test run for a few min. to set the carb....Then fly it use a 16x8 prop and don't use full throttle for more than 30 sec at a time. Fuel oil mix,,,, use a good petroleum oil in the 32-40:1 range.
Each flight use the full throttle a bit more, untill it will hand start almost all the time. Its now broken-in. Go to your favorite brand of 18x8 and have fun. Use a good oil in the 40-50:1 range

God I hate to ask this question, as I know it's going to open a can of worms...
What's the word on using AMSOIL in these conversions? I've always used "Pennzoil for Aircooled Motors", but I just inspected an ultralight airplane engine that had 600 hours of hard training use on it. The engine has no corrosion or carbon at all, and you can still see the honing crosshatch marks in the cylinder wall. It had been run the whole time, (except for break-in), on AMSOIL at 100 to 1. I've heard of a few people using AMSOIL in these little conversion motors, but they seem to be using it at a richer ratio. What's the consensus??
Thanks,

Have you ever wore out an engine using Pennzoil Aircooled??? There are a lot of Ultralite engines running it and racking up high hours on them.
Besides that 8$ a qt oil in a 25$ engine????

Okay, I got my Ryobi stripped down. I broke off the standoffs (?) that the magneto ignition mounts to -- I don't need these anyway, right, if I am going to go electronic (CH). Now what do I need to do to get the carb mounted back on the thing? Does the conversion kit come with a new backplate? What all will the kit come with?
Thanks

you need to machine and reuse the backplate that was on the engine. thats how the carb mounts on it. hopefully you didnt destroy it, but if you did you can order a new one for a few bucks from outdoor distributors. i had to do that when i had one that leaked too bad to use.
