I've found a source of new, excess stock Briggs 34cc engines at a very good price.
Drop Brian an email at [email protected]
His price is $80 + $12 shipping within the US.
I have just ordered one for conversion by Scott Ellingson at Brillelli. Given Scott's very high standards of workmanship, the finished product should be great for a total of around $200, delivered to the UK.
I had always dismissed Briggs as a suitable conversion engine, until hearing and seeing Prop Nut's Fokker DVII video on another thread.
Mine is destined for a Flair Hannibal - a WW1 looking monoplane - with the wingspan increased to around 100inches.

Prop Nut,
How much did your Briggs conversion engine on the Fokker DVII weigh?

About 5.5 lbs with the custom exhaust. I didnt bother doing anything with the mag to lose weight as I wanted as much as possible to balance the thing.

Hi All,
I ordered a 34cc Briggs from Bryan last year. Had it converted in no time at all and ticking over @ 1,100 rpm idle
on the test stand. Very quiet engine and very efficient on fuel. Will need a 'blurter pipe' so I can hear the dang thing.
Now the question.
Is there an alternate source for new or re-co'd Briggs 40cc bare 'power heads'.
I e-mailed Bryan a few weeks ago and have not heard back
Regards.

Good question,
I've never seen the 40cc sold as just the motor.I got my two 40cc's of of E-bay with the weed whackers still attached.I also have an unrun 34cc with the flywheel shaved if anyone is interested.

One of these days I have gotta find me a 40cc Briggs to see if it will haul my DVII around better than does the 34cc. I too am looking for a bare head 40cc.

Look at this thread, there are many pictures of the engine, some flight videos and much discussion. Page 2 has several photos.

PROPNUT-Thanks for the reply. I've emailed to Brian. What's the fuel this engine need- only gas or gas/oil mix?

Hey Dave Propnut,
After looking at the Fource owners manual (PDF) I notice that the bore of the 40cc is identical to the 34cc Briggs.
Hmmm - now if the piston is identical, we may be able to 'upgrade' our 34cc Briggs engines to 40cc by swapping out
just the crank and conrod.
Can anyone confirm.
Manuals for the Weed Boss Briggs engine can be found here --> http://www.atlanticpowerinc.com/weedboss.htm
There's no replacement for displacement

Hi Ian, havent heard from you in a loong time.
I have no idea about how to upgrade the 34cc to a 40cc, for me the fun of conversions is saving a bunch of money, no way I want to spend a bunch more.

canadair12,
I've heard that before too,I have both so I'll check tomorrow.Swapping cranks on one sounds expensive(possibly more than the cost of an engine) and not a lot of fun, though.

I bought Teched88's motor. It locked up on me after an hours run. Nasty score down the right side of the cylinder. I broke one of the rings getting it off. Then re-honed the cylinder, reassembled the motor and its running again. One ring one oil wiper. The rpm is the same or a bit more than with 2 rings. For some reason the carb is too lean. Even new in the plastic housing it would not run full open unless the choke lever was halfway closed. Even with a prop it will not run full throttle unless I keep it partially choked.
Should I drill out the brass jet a bit?? It is embossed with the # 38. By the way the motor is turning 5600 rpm with an APC 20-8.
The idle is 1800.

Hello everyone. My "Teched88's motor" turning Lanyu 17-6 wooden prop at 8000 rpm. I can't start it by hand, but with simple starter for 1.0 glow it start's fine. I guess that valves in my engine too noisy, is there anybody know right valve gap settings?

I have no idea on valve clearance. Just a note on the carb. I did remove all the green glue used to seal the needle valve. I was able to adjust the mixture somewhat. It still ran too lean. I opened the jet from .38mm to .55mm and that was way too much. I found another jet and opened it to .45mm and that works well. Top end with an APC is 5500rpm and idles all day at 1400rpm. Its an interesting motor. A conversation piece at the field.

I've bought used trimmer with the 40cc Briggs engine. I could not get it to start. I strongly believe that the valve timing is off, just by looking at the valves when rotating the engine. What is a proper way to set the valve timing on these engines?
All help is greatly appreciated,

Yes, It does have compression or some other resistance (both valves are closed on the down-stroke, it could be a vacuum
)......but just by looking at the valves, intake valve opens on the up-stroke. When I was trying to start it, I have had a noticeable blow-back from the carb.
