Ignore the smoke. It doesn't mean anything.

So
How do I know if I was firing the un-lit-glow off E85, or was dieseling after the lit-glow start?
How can I cool this down... more oil? Less prop? Run it only in the winter?

Note/warning:
Seems even the e85 diluted some,
the gasoline in the E85 did attack my fuel syringe black piston.
No, it wasn't dieseling. Ethanol needs a hot plug, try an OS F or Enya #3. If that fails you may need to increase compression ratio, I've not tried that yet. Chances are E85 will run hotter, it offers much less cooling through evaporation. I've not bothered to compare actual engine temperatures.

Yes, you have to use a gasoline compatible fuel system.

It sounds like you need to finish breaking that engine in.

E85 is mostly alcohol. You must use alcohol blending lubricants. Anything OK for methanol should be fine. Nothing in the main stream market for gasoline will blend with alcohol. There are a handful that blend in both. Kltoz Original Techniplate is one.

Just bought a smaller prop,
dropping from a 10-6 to a 10-5, and going from MAS to APC should lighten the load a bit too.
I can also 'borrow' the plug from my 4stroke Mag52
Will try combinations of those in addition to raising the castor to 20% this weekend,
and report the results

That's the way mine are Jim, no smoke at all unless they idle for a while and then only just a puff when you hit the throttle.

My Saito FG engines give a puff of smut when you quickly open the throttle after idling for a bit but no smoke like on glow fuel.

My Saito 150 is actually not any different than thw FG -20's in the way it runs.

You must be able to identify mixture setting by sound.

You don't have to convert anything on the big Tigers. Run E85 from the gas station at 1.99 a gallon and put in 12-18% oil depending on the model you have. The S2000,2500 and 3000 run on 18% oil (15% synthetic 3% castor) and the S2300, 4500 run on 12% oil (10% synthetic 2% castor). Just change your glow plug to an OS F and it will run like a top even inverted without on board glow driver. It is the best fuel for you Super Tigers. I have been running this and checking head and exhaust temp with laser thermometer and with that mix the temps are identical to glow fuel.
O-Boy,you have got to be kidding.

I met a guy that runs a big Supertiger 2000on E85. I could not believe how good it ran. Just use a 4 cycle OS Max "F" Glow plug & 17-18 & oil that mixes good ...like Klotz. I got his phone number even! Capt,n

I recently converted a Saito GK220 to gas, simply because it was too thirsty as glow. Have a look on youtube.

It was easier than I thought, and the result was pretty good.

Starfighter,

I am intriqued as you mentioned converting a BGX to gas. I have one and the project I am looking to use it in is a 22 lb scale model and the problem i am having is getting the tanks low enough as to not siphon.
CAn you positoin the tanks anywhere with a gas conversion?
What is needed to convert? Sounds interesting

Thanks
mike

Hi,
I have a SuperTigre G4500 Glow Engine ( 45 cc ) and I have heard the these can be converted to Spark/gas.

I was wondering if any one has heard of this conversion, how much it might cost and whether or not it is successful.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Merlin Man.
Is very succesul Only use a walbro

THE BGX WAS THE FIRST ENGINE I CONVERT 2 YEARS AGO, I WAS SURPRISED ABOUT THE SUCCESFULL,
THE OTHER PIC IS A SUPERTIGRE 35CC STE

BOTH ENGINES ARE VERY POWERFULL MORE THAN A COMERCIAL 40CC GAS

i THINK THE ST 4500 WILL BE MORE POWERFULL THAN ANY 55 CC

I have a ST4500 converted to gas. It has the Pro Spark ignition system using a 1/4-32 spark plug. I had needle bearings put on the con rod as well. Plan on converting my BGX-1 as well. Hey Max, how much do you charge?

Wey Max I want to convert a 120ax to gas and NOT put rollers in the con rod. What oil ratio are you using on your BGX?
