Default Gas/Glow engine icy day start-up

Here is a video of starting up and runing a MB290 engine conversion on a cold icy day. The engine cover blew off in the nite and the engine and test stand was covered with ice. well take a look how it starts and runs. Thanks For watching Capt,n P.S. Make sure you wear a firemans heavy leather glove when starting or stoping a engine like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c85M0Rq1TKE

Nice running little engine. Maybe you need to buy a pusher prop for her. Maybe the attachment would be of interest to you.

Bill

Well, I guess you can't enlarge it enough to be useful

It sure runs good Captain! Guess that answers as to how they will run in cold weather too huh?

Two cycle engine LOVE the cold and will produce the most power in a cold, high air density atmosphere. That little Mac is a sweet runner.

Yes that sure does. I am using a slighty different mix on the last seveal runs. [ul][*] 2 oz of Glow fuel...10% nitro 18% oil[*] 2 oz of Strait menthanol...good stuff from Duneland $3.75 gal[*] 4 oz of pump gas..a 32-1 mix using Penzoil air cooled oil

Well, I didn't do the math, but offhand that seems like an awful lot of oil....

Runs great though, congrats!

AV8TOR, I did not do the math either because it is not one of my best talents....Ha! I was hoping someone may help me figure it out. I would then know how much oil to eliminate! I do think the 32-1 Penzoil mix may help protect the insides of the engine. I got to get the engine apart and see what other good or bad things happened. Like RUST!!!! That old Walbro carb is nothing special either, but it seems to hold up good to my punishment. I do not run it dry or any after lube either. Part of the destruction test! Best Regards Capt,n

Hay there cap. If you are running 18% oil in your glow fuel and your putting at 2oz and 2 oz of Strait menthanol that will bring your oil down in your fuel to 9% that is 4 oz of glow fuel and menthanol miz. you are mizing that with gas and oil miz at 32:1 at 4oz that is 1:1 glow fuel and gas oil mix that will bring you to ruffly 22.4:1 I think. I need to think about it agian. That does not look right. It should be like 18:1 oil miz. So I know I am doing my math wrong. That is a lot of oil. but with it that engine was running great, so you are doing somthing right lol.

Do you have a hard time with it running backwords a lot?

I am sure its getting plenty of oil, but it does not smoke like it is getting too much. I think the most of the oil may be Klotz a synthetic oil. The 2 oz of 32-1 Penzoil was a mistake....I grabbed the wrong gas container when mixing. I noticed it seem to run well so I continued running that mix until its gone. Like its been said, more oil...more power to a point! I am going to try a no Nitro mix next summer and less oil with more compression. The big Supertigers (high compression) run good with no Nitro. I did not rev the engine in the video to top RPM. Those kinda loose bearings may cause a mishap in very cold weather with a APC none-wood prop. Now I got to figure out how t get the prop hub off without damage. It may need to bee heated if there is locktite in threads. Best Regards capt,n

its been a busy day, but I got the MB290 engine tore town pretty much. I got a few photos of the innards for you guys to lay a eyeball on! I found the front bearing to be super loose. The piston and rings look good to me. The bottom of the sleeve has a strange condition now. There was no gasket on cyl base...just sealant. I think with no gasket there is better compression, but the bottom of the sleeve is then closer to fly-weights. That clearance was not enough with loose bearings allowing the bottom of the sleeve to be hit by the counter balance. It curled up a .030+ edge on bottom edge of sleeve. I think grinding a little off that edge will be a good idea. Also it sure needs new bearings. Bearings are not that expensive. I will fix it. I will also check balance the best I can and make sure crank is strait. Capt,n

Be sure to take a plane or two, and some engines to play with!!

About 75 degrees and no wind here in Puerto Penasco today. Had a nice outing with a new student of mine. He flew my electric trainer and I flew my Gas/Glow Twist 60 with the BME modified Super Tiger .90. Really nice day/outing!

Good luck with your engine project!

Take care,
AV8TOR

Cap,

You going to be here for the 8th of Feb.? The Owosso swop has been moved to Chesaning. They was not able to get Baker and have to move to the fair grounds.

I am going to have a table there this year.

You might have intended this for Cap but I'm not too far away in Port Huron. The only problem might be money to spend because I may drop $325.00 for an Enya 1.55 on the 21st.

Paul, We hope to get going for Florida within the next 10 days. I got a couple of appointments first. I have been to that swap meet in Owasso a few times. lots of fun. I won a door prize one time there. It was a small set of tools. Is the new place large enough? Capt,n

Jim, What is the ratio of oil at 4.5%? Would it be close to 5/100 or 5 parts of oil to 100 parts of fuel? I am trying to learn this math stuff...it may take a while for me! Capt,n

Here's the math again:
2parts at 18% +2 parts at 0% makes 4 parts at 9%
add 4 parts at 3%, that makes a total of (9+3)/2=6% oil

Other method:
2 oz at 18% = .36 oz oil
4 parts at 3% = .12 oz oil

total .48 oz oil, divide by 8 oz fuel = .06 (times 100% makes 6% oil or 1/16)

P.S.
The gas in the mix makes for easy starting in the cold. I am surprised that the mix worked at all and did not gel or separate.
That engine looks as if it just begs for RC operation, if you reduce the long prop overhang that makes the shaft wobble.

We have -20°C right now, so I can use my time for some nice fema starter projects

I am also surprised the mix stayed in a good state for running. Most of the oil is Klotz oil. It was in the glow fuel to start with and seems to mix real good with methanol. The other oil was Penzoil for air cooled engines I use in my leaf blower and regular 2 cycle power tools. But that was a mistake I just grabbed the wrong fuel container. My next mix will not include the Penzoil. I do not think it is of no benefit and may produce more carbon. Unless a side benefit would be rust prevention?? Just do not know. I do know that fuel was mixed over a month ago and spent a lot of time in the cold. Myself....I am about ready to go to Florida! Thanks for the math lesson....I may need more! Best Regards capt,n
