Hello all,
Me and a friend want to spend our summer vacation building something neat, him and I picked out a dragster
. Other then having to make the frame and some sort of drivetrain, whats a good chainsaw engine on the cheap is good enough for something of this size? Im thinking 7 foot long and about ~3-5 in. wide for the frame dimentions. Here are some linkies of ones I have kept my eyes on.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Homelite-290-mot...3A1%7C294%3A50

http://cgi.ebay.com/Homelite-Z-3850b...3A2%7C294%3A50
Tellz me what you think guys
.
Thanks

Do you want an inexpencive looser or a more expencive winner.
Loosing get boaring fast.
The saws to go with will be the Stihl 066 or the smaller Stihl 044.
Both of these saws have been at the top of their class for years.
You can even get tuned pipes for them.
Check out some hot saw forums. Perhaps you could come up with an engine for less money.
A broken case would not mean much to you, but the saw would be a parts saw for a logger.
Hope this helps......

Well heres the thing, we dont work yet (17 years old), but no matter what engine I pick im going to mod it anyhow. Aint 100+CC engine alittle much for something like this? Is not for racing, just to drive around and keep us ocupied. If I can find the Stihl 066 engine under $200 ill get it since you seem to know its good
, but I dont wana go overboard.
Thanks for all the help guys

The thing with the 066 and the 044 you would not need to modify them.
They are in a high state of tune to start with.
The 066 is 66cc's not a 100.
I don't know of anyone who makes a 100cc chainsaw.
At 17, I'd say make a working frame first, you may not need the engine.
You may be able to borrow one from a friend. At least for the testing.

Ah, there was 2 or 3 chainsaws on ebay at 85CC and 112CC engines(I think they were dual cylinder engines). 66cc sounds like a good size, but can they run on methanol ok? Have a good place to get it and has a but more punch for a price, but I think the engine needs a 8-9:1 compression ratio to run good with it. I think the frame will be the easy part
, the rear drivetrain will be the pain in the rear to make. I dont want a chain driven rear end
Thanks guys

Just use a goped engine much simplier if your not really racing hard core.

Thank you for the link.
Not only was I wrong I was way wrong.
I had believed, and I have owned these saws, an 066 was 66cc and an 076 was 76cc and the 088 was 88cc.
I don't remember where I got this from but I've had it wrong for 20 years.
The 088 I had was incredable. It was ported, the carb. was bored out. it was a BEAST.
Arborists use to rent it from me to do big trees. Very little slowed this saw down.
It turned 13,000rpm and 10,000 to 11,000 in the wood.
I used raceing fuel and Opti-2 mixed at 75 to 1.
It cut faster than a twin engine 44" bar I had. The bar had an 075 on each end.
Again Thank You.

Well I pretty much gave up on the chainsaw motors. I have an old homelite 30CC here I can work with, maybe run it on some 33% just to give it the extra boost of power. I need to find some way to advance the timing to around 5-10 degrees BTDC. Anyone know how to do this? Or should I make an adjustable bracket for the coil to alter timing?
Thanks guys

Well actualy I was reading the timing wrong, its about ~3-5 degrees BTDC. But whats the maximum safe timing for these, let alone on nitro? Am I going to krazy for this
? I dont mind it lasting a long time as if I blow it up, its a cheap fix. But I dont wana have to rebuild it like real top fuel dragsters after EVERY race
.
Thanks
Edit - Ok well its 3-5 BTDC on the crank + flywheel, but once you put the coil on its at TDC. Just now figured that out...
