Well, I have one. It's on a working yard tool and if I butcher it my wife will hang me. But Iwas out there using it today and thought "Hey....Hmmmm...'. It does have an oil sump but it is just spash lubrication. The carb is mounted to the intake port just like the smaller counterparts. But, they get lube somehow.
Does anyone know if the new Satos with spark ignition use mix gas?If so they must be getting lube just like the glow engines do. It would be interesting to try one of these 4 strokes on mix gas and drain the crankcase and see how long it lives. I do know if you turn it upside down, like to edge the drive, it turns into a "skeeter-chasser", caugh...caugh....wave.....

Not sure what you mean by the "new" 4-strokes. Possibly the 29cc Chinese built engines that seem to have replaced the B&S engines in Craftsmen weed whackers? Anyway if you do a search I am sure you can find threads on the following engines.
Honda GX-31 35
Ryobi 26
B&S 34cc 40cc
Subaru-Robin/ Fuji 34cc
Stihl 32cc 65cc
Shindaiwa 80cc
With the exception of the Shindaiwa, I have at least one of each. Anyone want to part with a Shindaiwa?

any one know who makes the troy-bilt 4 stroke motor? I have one of these weedeaters but don't want to tear it apart to find the manufacture. It sure runs good, I keep thinking it would make a awsome plane engine..

Some Company history I found:
Theo Moll, Emil Jochum and Erwin Gerhard formed a partnership to purchase the assets of Modern Tool and Die Company located on Power Avenue in Cleveland. The initial capitol investment was $4500 and the company’s end product was tools and dies.
MTD’s first products were perforating dies and a rolling machine for making window channels for Standard Products. MTD employed 12 employees in 1933 and by 1934 the head count was 60 employees.
In 1936 the company produces its first automotive stampings products, grilles for Graham-Paige automobiles.
In 1952 the controlling interest in Midwest Industries Inc.' is purchased. With this MTD begins to manufacture pedal bikes, velocipedes, kiddie cars and playground equipment.
In 1954 MTD enters the garden equipment industry with introduction of a line of wheelbarrows.
In 1958 MTD enters the lawn & garden power equipment industry with the production of an 18†power rotary mower.
In 1959 MTD takes a giant step into future growth when they begin the manufacturing of self- propelled lawn mowers, garden tractors and other power equipment.
In 1962 MTD Purchases Sehl Engineering Ltd. of Canada, this later became MTD Products, Ltd. (today’s MTD Canada).
In 1966 MTD purchases Industrial Plastics Company in Cleveland.
In 1968 MTD starts snow thrower production.
In 1975 MTD purchases Yard-Man name from Montgomery Ward.
In 1980 MTD Builds 160,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant in Brownsville, Tennessee. This plant has been recently shut down.
In 1981 the Cub Cadet Product line is acquired from International Harvester, and the White Outdoor Products Company is acquired from the old White Motor Company.
In 1985 Martin, Tennessee Plant begins operation, and Arnold Corporation is acquired.
In 1986 Aircap Industries in Tupelo, Mississippi is acquired.
In 1990 Customer Service call center is established
In 1994 MTD builds the Modern Transmission Development Company plant in Leitchfield, Kentucky.
In 1996 Joint venture with Lesco creates Commercial Turf Products.
In 2000 Opening of a Hungarian manufacturing facility with expanded capacity for electrical products and acquired Ryobi giving them the capacity to produce 1.5 million engines and related hand-held products.
In 2001 MTD acquired Garden Way including the Troy-Bilt and Bolens brands.
2006 - Began building lawn equipment under the Massey Ferguson brand for sale in Europe.[2]
2007 - Began building the low-end lawn & garden tractors for Toro (company).
2008 - Began having a third-party company (located in China) manufacture a new line of engines for the Craftsman 2008 line of Snowthrowers. They are no longer building them with Tecumseh engines.

Wow! That is a TON of info! Thanks a lot. I wonder how many of their products would make good "gassers'? Nice to know Zenoah in in on it. They make good stuff from what I understand.

Honda didn't have anything to do with the Mow The Driveway machine, neither did Zenoah which is now owned by Husqvarna

Ryobi 4 strokes come in different generations. 1 ,2 and 3.
The 3rd generation was at one time badged as a zenoah/redmax.Sheet metal conrod and poor QC made it a giant POS and waste of time.

Pontiac,
Man, that is SWEET! What are you going to put it on?Ilove it. Does it have a crank case with oil in it? I went out this weekend and purposly turned my weedeater over upside down a few times to see what would happen now that it is broken in. No more smoke! I think it would be fine in an airplane mounted verticaly. I doubt there would be many issues.
What weedeater is that out of?What prop are you using?

Big4d, thanks. This came out of a troy bilt weed wacker, I got it very cheap from a neighbor who suddenly had to move overseas. Yes it does have a seperate crankcase for oil, and unlike the honda's it is in the back making it hard to get to once it is mounted on a plane. I was going to try it on a Sig Rascal 110, I just have to make some time and get the project going. It will probably fly the Rascal kind of scale like. A buddy of mine here has flown his rascal with the Honda GX-31 pretty nicely, but the Gx-31 is a much nicer better quality engine and has a tad bit more power. As far as mounting these engines inverted, I have not experimented with that as of yet, it does have a wet sump and theoretically it should operate inverted, but that does not mean it will operate efficiently for extended runs.

That is what I though it was. I have the same weedwhacker. But, it is new and my wife might not appricate ripping it apart. But trust me, whe the rest of it wears out, it will be my next project. Mine has the same oil fill hole in the back. You are right, changing the oil might be an issue.
I don't think mounting it inverted is an option. That would put the oil on the back side of the piston. That will not work. Maybe for a short peiod of time (loop, roll, etc.) but extended flight is out.
