converting a stihl

Does anyone have any info on converting any of the Stihl weed trimmer engines for aircraft use? I have Stihl engines coming out my ears!!!

Hi!
The FS 36 is the same as a 31cc Ryobi and most parts are interchangeable though some of the threads are different............Bob

I may have access to one of the 25cc weedeater engines, but I already have two of the later model 27cc engines. Very similiar but a little different mount on the back. I like the way you did your prop hub. Is that custom cut or did you purchase it? Also, it appears you did away with your flywheel ign coil?

RE: converting a stihl

I make all the parts myself and the coil just wasn't mounted yet .It use the stock ignition .

RE: converting a stihl

Ken that is awesome! Would you be willing to make a prop hub for the 27cc. I would give you a 27cc stihl for doing it. Thanks. Oh btw, just got our new shipment of spring orders in. New Stihl 4 mix (four stroke) is 36.3cc, 1.7 hp, with tremendous torque. Also tremendous price as is still new

sounds good to me if the engine is good .

RE: converting a stihl

Ken, the engine is fine. It was on an fs55. Customer burnt up clutch housing plus needed gearbox. Not worth repairing as was 200.00 brand new.

The Stihl 25.4cc off of the Pro Series equipment is a great engine. I converted one and had Ken make the parts for me and it spins a MAS 18x6 at 8000 and a Pro Zinger 18x8 at 7000. from what I understand the 27cc is not as powerful as the 25.4cc since it is on the non-Pro Series equipment. I would like to see what you get out of it though.

Almost forgot.
My engine was on a HT 75 pole saw. It is the same engine that is in all of the Pro Series machines though.

RE: converting a stihl

Ken,
Sorry for the delay in shipping. I finally got the engine boxed up and shipped. You should have by about Friday. This engine is in excellent shape. Like I said the clutch came apart and destroyed the outer plastic shroud on the trimmer. It also slightly damaged the base plate of the engine. I went ahead and ordered the base plate and will send it to you asap. Let me know if I can do anything for you... parts, etc.
Thanks, Tripp Reid

RE: converting a stihl

For Ken Lambert or tripp3d-- I have a Stihl hedge trimmer, model HS45, that the clutch and reciprocating mechanism for the blades came apart, price to fix is over half what I paid for the whole thing. The engine is cherry, though, runs great. The manual specs say it's 27.2 cc, 1hp. Would it be suitable to modify for r/c use? I don't need one just yet, but will hang on to it if I can use it later.

RE: converting a stihl

khodges, yes you have the exact same engine only mine came out of a line trimmer.

RE: converting a stihl

,,Well!!,,,FINALLY!!,,,I've found other people that do the same thing as I!!,,,LOL,, I've been converting for 20 years,, I've been doing the bigger engines,,,currently,,I have a twin engine mousqito bomber,,,that has 2 45cc stihl chain saw engines,,running a homemade belt reduction drive. I'm running scale diameter 3 blade props,,the effect is out of this world!! Before McCulloch went belly up,,,those where good engines,,,converted many of them,,something else to concider,,I've converted a couple of the "chop saw" engines,,,these engines are "souped up" at the factory,,,and are real power houses!! I have a 6.8 ci stihl chop saw engine converted,,,and a 3w100,,they are about the same in power,,,but MILES apart in cost!!,,yes,,the single cylinder engine does have a little more vibration,,,but not that bad,, When I turn the flywheel,,,I remove the crankshaft engine,,remount the flywheel on the crank,,,then put it in the lathe,,when you machine off the cooling fins,,they are dead on straight,,,and I make a flat spot to mount my prop hub,,(I also turn them too,,,they look like a spool),,I do as much of this on the lathe as I can,,,when your done,,,it's dead on,,no runout at all,, really doesn't take that long to do,, ok,,,I've rambled on enough,,,if anybody has any comments,,,or questions,,please don't hesitate!!,,

RE: converting a stihl

Ken, you are definately a master machinist. The parts look great and I love the pitts style muffler you designed! The only problem I am having is I think the hub was tapped to fit the stub shaft on the back rather than crank threads on the flywheel side which are slightly larger. I am still very very impressed with the quality of your work. Could not look any better!!! THANK YOU!

KenLambert 02-10-2005 07:13 PM

RE: converting a stihl

it is taped 8mmx 1.00 I used the engine you sent me and it fits this one if yours has a different thread I will have to make another one but it is for the flywheel side . Are the engines the same or could one have a different crank ? you can call me at 903-628-9837 if you want
