Does anyone have any info on converting any of the Stihl weed trimmer engines for aircraft use? I have Stihl engines coming out my ears!!!
|
RE: converting a stihl
I know something about Stihl BR 400 blower engines and would like another one or two.

are they the 25.4 cc here is a pic of one I did
|
RE: converting a stihl
Hi!
The FS 36 is the same as a 31cc Ryobi and most parts are interchangeable though some of the threads are different............Bob |
RE: converting a stihl
I may have access to one of the 25cc weedeater engines, but I already have two of the later model 27cc engines. Very similiar but a little different mount on the back. I like the way you did your prop hub. Is that custom cut or did you purchase it? Also, it appears you did away with your flywheel ign coil?
|
RE: converting a stihl
I make all the parts myself and the coil just wasn't mounted yet .It use the stock ignition .
|
RE: converting a stihl
Ken that is awesome! Would you be willing to make a prop hub for the 27cc. I would give you a 27cc stihl for doing it. Thanks. Oh btw, just got our new shipment of spring orders in. New Stihl 4 mix (four stroke) is 36.3cc, 1.7 hp, with tremendous torque. Also tremendous price as is still new
|
RE: converting a stihl
sounds good to me if the engine is good .
|
RE: converting a stihl
Ken, the engine is fine. It was on an fs55. Customer burnt up clutch housing plus needed gearbox. Not worth repairing as was 200.00 brand new.
|
RE: converting a stihl
no problem
my address Kenneth Lambert 834 cr 4003 New Boston,TX 75570 I can use the engine to make your parts so threads and such are correct |
RE: converting a stihl
The Stihl 25.4cc off of the Pro Series equipment is a great engine. I converted one and had Ken make the parts for me and it spins a MAS 18x6 at 8000 and a Pro Zinger 18x8 at 7000. from what I understand the 27cc is not as powerful as the 25.4cc since it is on the non-Pro Series equipment. I would like to see what you get out of it though.
Almost forgot. My engine was on a HT 75 pole saw. It is the same engine that is in all of the Pro Series machines though. |
RE: converting a stihl
Thanks a million Ken. I will send the engine ups Tues. You should have about Wed. No hurry at all. Its too cold and I haven't a plane to put it in yet. Thanks again!!!
|
RE: converting a stihl
Ken,
Sorry for the delay in shipping. I finally got the engine boxed up and shipped. You should have by about Friday. This engine is in excellent shape. Like I said the clutch came apart and destroyed the outer plastic shroud on the trimmer. It also slightly damaged the base plate of the engine. I went ahead and ordered the base plate and will send it to you asap. Let me know if I can do anything for you... parts, etc. Thanks, Tripp Reid |
RE: converting a stihl
Ok thanks
|
RE: converting a stihl
to tripp got the engine tonight thanks for the calender !!!! and plugs . I will start drawing up a mount and get all built and sent to you . It may be next week before I'm done ,got several other things going thanks Kenneth
|
RE: converting a stihl
Thanks Ken, Like I said no hurry at all. I will send you the part for your engine as soon as it comes. Thanks again,
Tripp |

RE: converting a stihl
Awesome Ken, You're the man:D
|
RE: converting a stihl
For Ken Lambert or tripp3d-- I have a Stihl hedge trimmer, model HS45, that the clutch and reciprocating mechanism for the blades came apart, price to fix is over half what I paid for the whole thing. The engine is cherry, though, runs great. The manual specs say it's 27.2 cc, 1hp. Would it be suitable to modify for r/c use? I don't need one just yet, but will hang on to it if I can use it later.

RE: converting a stihl
khodges, yes you have the exact same engine only mine came out of a line trimmer.

RE: converting a stihl
,,Well!!,,,FINALLY!!,,,I've found other people that do the same thing as I!!,,,LOL,, I've been converting for 20 years,, I've been doing the bigger engines,,,currently,,I have a twin engine mousqito bomber,,,that has 2 45cc stihl chain saw engines,,running a homemade belt reduction drive. I'm running scale diameter 3 blade props,,the effect is out of this world!! Before McCulloch went belly up,,,those where good engines,,,converted many of them,,something else to concider,,I've converted a couple of the "chop saw" engines,,,these engines are "souped up" at the factory,,,and are real power houses!! I have a 6.8 ci stihl chop saw engine converted,,,and a 3w100,,they are about the same in power,,,but MILES apart in cost!!,,yes,,the single cylinder engine does have a little more vibration,,,but not that bad,, When I turn the flywheel,,,I remove the crankshaft engine,,remount the flywheel on the crank,,,then put it in the lathe,,when you machine off the cooling fins,,they are dead on straight,,,and I make a flat spot to mount my prop hub,,(I also turn them too,,,they look like a spool),,I do as much of this on the lathe as I can,,,when your done,,,it's dead on,,no runout at all,, really doesn't take that long to do,, ok,,,I've rambled on enough,,,if anybody has any comments,,,or questions,,please don't hesitate!!,,

RE: converting a stihl
Tripp
your parts are in the mail any problems let me know thanks |
RE: converting a stihl
Thanks Ken,
The lower crankcase for your engine just came in off a backorder. Sent UPS today (Tues) Thank You so much!!! |
RE: converting a stihl
Ken, you are definately a master machinist. The parts look great and I love the pitts style muffler you designed! The only problem I am having is I think the hub was tapped to fit the stub shaft on the back rather than crank threads on the flywheel side which are slightly larger. I am still very very impressed with the quality of your work. Could not look any better!!! THANK YOU!
|
RE: converting a stihl
it is taped 8mmx 1.00 I used the engine you sent me and it fits this one if yours has a different thread I will have to make another one but it is for the flywheel side . Are the engines the same or could one have a different crank ? you can call me at 903-628-9837 if you want
|
RE: converting a stihl
I think you may be right about different cranks, I just tapped it to fit the larger crank. Fits fine. I think I went to sleep last night thinking about that muffler you made. It looks great!
|
RE: converting a stihl
got the package tonight thanks for the parts and wrenches , I you have a problem with the hub just let me know
|
RE: converting a stihl
bofrcr, I have converted a few weedeater motor with very good results.
I have a question for you. Where do you get most of your motors? Thanks Terry |
RE: converting a stihl
Ken: Can you tell me what CC displacement a older Stihl 011AV chainsaw engine has? Thanks Capt,n
|
RE: converting a stihl
I'm sure mr.Tripp can he is the stihl parts man . I just do the conversions
|
RE: converting a stihl
Ken, I think I may have spoke too soon. I used a drill press before a retapped threads and got off center somehow. I may need to buy a hub from you tapped to 9 mm but just like the other one otherwise. MY FAULT NO DOUBT. Just let me know how much I need to pay you for the other hub if you can still provide this service. Thanks, Tripp
|
RE: converting a stihl
I will get one made up is it 9x 1.00 ?
|
RE: converting a stihl
Ken....can you post the typical thread sizes (crankshaft) found on chainsaw, blower and weed whip engines. Thanks Capt Ps anyone who will post know sizes here...then we will all know!!
|
RE: converting a stihl
9 x 1.00 would be great
|
RE: converting a stihl
Cap'n John, give me a day or two and I will list some of the more popular Stihl crank sizes.
|
RE: converting a stihl
capt.
I will get a list of what I know posted for you and others in a day or two |
RE: converting a stihl
here are some of them off the top of my head .
Ryob long shaft 3/8x24 short shaft 5/16x24 Homie long shaft 3/8x24 short shaft 5/16x24 Poulan 36cc 3/8x24 54cc 3/8x24 42/46cc 5/16x24 60 cc 3/8x24 stihl 24.5 cc 8mmx1.00 27cc 8mmx1.00 or 3/8 x 24 if the long shaft Husky most smaller are 8mmx 1.00 thats all i can think of at this time .I may have to go to the shop and do some measuring on different ones |
RE: converting a stihl
Hey! guy!! Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you! I haunt the chain saw shops,,and outdoor power equipment stores,, you'll find that most of the guy's in the saw shops already are aware of the use of these engines in our planes. Once you get to know these guy's,,and it'll take dropping in on a weekly basis,,let them know what your looking for. At a shop where I patronize,,the mechanic saw me walk in one day,,hollered at me to come back in the shop,,and wanted to know if I would be interested in an engine,,and pulled out a echo twin!!! I about fell on the floor!! The BME engine is the direct decendant of this!!,,turning the engine over,,I soon found out it was shot,[&o], I think it would be interesting pursuing that,, you also nose around garage sales,, estate sales,,etc. there's LOT'S of engines out there!! If you want to go much above 5 cu. ",,you'll have to consider the twin,,as the reciprocating dynamics have a lot of counterwieght on the crankshaft,,making it heavy,,and shake too. I also have a 3w-100 and a da150,,both smooth engines. ok,,,I'll stop rambling,,,any more questions,,feel free to ask!!

RE: converting a stihl
Ken Lambert: looks like you got a good start on the thread size on crankshafts. I wonder what a Red max 40cc engine has for thread size? Thanks Capt,n

RE: converting a stihl
Tripp trying to get one of each of the new 4-stroke trimmer motor to do side by side test looking to get stihl, briggs & stratton, shidiawa, ryobi, and honda. Have access to machine equip. and have done a few two stokes. Just wanting to know if I would be able to get just a power head of it or if not could I drive to Memphis & buy one from you & maybe sell back some spare parts I would not be needing.
Thanks Hubert |
