RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

I tested the voltage with everything hooked up as it would be during operation, but i will go and set everything up again from the beginning to make shure.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

OK, i just re-tested evything and it is still putting out way over 600v while sparking. I burnt out the spark coil i made testing it.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Is't a homemade sparkcoil your using ?
How do you wind the HV-coil and the sparkcoil ?
The easyway the reduce the voltage is decrease L3 or L1.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Yes, i was using a homemade sparkcoil, im only using it for testing though. I have a factory-made sparkcoil on the way.

I wound the HV-coil with the specs on the schematic, same wire sizes/amount of winds.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

It's normal you distroy your homemade sparkcoil, I distroy maybe 10 of this homemade coils.
Sparkcoils need more isolation as normal, also between the wires must be placed isolationpaper.
Wait for your factory-sparkcoil befor you test the CDI again.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

when winding ignition coils, it is extremely important to keep your windings level and to have fish paper between each layer.

Your goal is to have minimum voltage difference between two adjacent wires to minimize flash over.

If there is several hundred volts difference between two adjacent wires, you are going to loose the ignition coil.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

wasnt planning on using the homemade coil, i knew i was going to fry it pretty quick because i wound it with a drill and i didnt insulate between the layers.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Ok so i finally got everything i needed to fully test my ignition, But when i power it up, it is very erratic, the microcontroller doesnt seem to be doing anything. I made a ground shield that covers the HV circuit and that filtered out the noise and now it doesnt respond to anthing, it just cycles. I havent tried re-programming the PIC yet but do you have any suggestions for things that i can check?

-Thanks

Mine wouldn't work initially either until I put in the two jumpers on the control board as suggested by Bigboat.
Just a thought.

Hello,
i have ask Bigboat but will ask all who is reading.......is there any way to embed the programing into a windows based GUI (graphic user interface)
like one of the programes already out there for programable ignition that we may use to programe this unit ???

http://www.sportdevices.com/ignition...n.htm#download ingition wizard

http://www.ignitech.cz/english/aindex.htm cddcip.exe

just a couple i have come across that use to program there CDi

No joy with software.....ok could someone please check my circuit to see if my "in circuit programing" components are corrcet ???

and do i need pin 14 powered up to re program as well as pin 4 ?

i have copyed this......... http://feng3.cool.ne.jp/en/rcd.html

But as per JMJ has said on his web site pin 4 , 5, 12 and 13 are the only ones to use

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Brett,

You have to built the complete programmer, you can't use only the connections.
There is only one problem if you use also the Voltage of the programmer, it's to low.
Thats why you have to use the Voltage of the battery and not the Voltage of the programmer.
It's not necessary to use the IC-feet, you can also use wires and a small connector to connect the programmer and the CDI.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Hi Rob,
I can not make the RCD programmer complete and build it into the CD1 as there are a couple of parts that do not mix

1: pin 10 on the pic goes to the bc557 base leg but goes to ground in the RCD circuit

2: R5 and C2 of the RCD circuit are they a double up on C1 , C2 in the CDi

3: ZD 5.1 of RCD does not need to be there as power can come from Reg output of CDi

4: ZD 13 v of RCDdoes not need to be there as volts can come from the 12 volt power source

5: if ZD13 from RCD isnt used then where does C1 go to ?

i will draw up another circuit best i can please comment on it

Ok been working most of the day on this...newbie drawer.....

componets R4 , C2 and ZD5 from RCD programer are missing from this circuit, can i just turn on the main circuit and get my 5volts from my battery ?

cheers

This is the way I use the programmer.
I plug the wired IC-feet into the programmer and the other connector to the CDI.
The battery have to plugged to the CDI when programming.

Ok nice......can you get away with using the battery power from the 5 volt Reg ?

Bigboat 12-20-2009 05:15 PM

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

No problem, into the testperiod I programmed the CDI 30 or 40 times a day.

AK means Auckland ?

Rob what resistor did you use instead of the VR 10k ???

yes AK is Auckland

I have my programmer up and runing.....;)

Can Anyone please tell my a simple way to convert the ''C'' Code to Hex, i have tryed MPLAP but is hard for me to set up unless im given step by

step  [:o] and because i dont know what to look for finding a converter that will work to do the job makes things tricky

GUI windows XP program that only does converting is all i need

thanks heaps
brett

ps. yes ive had very late nights mostly software related and faulty com port

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Download MicroC-PIC (link is on my website), start new project, copy/past the code from the Exelsheet I send to you yesterday into MicroC, go to build project in MicroC, and you have all the files you needed.

kermet 01-14-2010 05:03 AM

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Yes i am able to do that with ''MicroC'' but the hex file will not run the CDi and looks different, the first line is not complete across the width

below is the first 10 lines.................

i missed your email about excel sheet, please send again

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Hello to all CDI builders !

I have been a member here for a few years and always enjoy sitting back and reading the posts.
Most recently I started to build ( first the RCD Programmer) this CDI project everyone wants to finish. I have been building my own version of the basic CDI (without advance) since 1987 and have very few problems with mine. Although I wanted to make this one as a complete unit, (new CDI here) I have decided to split it into two boards. Has anyone adapted the timer board to another brew of ignition board? If they have, I'd like to read about your adventures! In a few days, I'll be uploading pics and schematics of mine to share with all readers. It's a very simple to build circuit, common parts except for the toriod winding, which everyone hates to do! Well, I take my time and have wound over 100 with no problems ever encountered. Currently I've been converting 20cc to 30cc weed eater engines and have about 20 in my collection. All run great and I enjoy everything about them. email me @ [email protected] with any topics.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

The problem with allmost all cdi-projects are the HV-coils.
The timerboard isn't a problem and can be used for all other kind of boards.
I'm bussy to make a TCI-ignition so they can drop the HV-board and use a normal ignitioncoil of a mopped.

RE: New CDI - opensource project JMJ and Bigboat

Rob, I have a similar schematic which works at 6 volts.... used it for years with weed whackers that had points and is extremely reliable. I'll redraw it and post with parts list.. no PCB as of yet but if there's interest I'll plot it and post that also. I made mine with a universal vero board from Radio Shack, stuffed it in a pill vial and fired it up...worked every time. Now all I need to do is adapt it for Hall Effect sensor and we'll have something to try. Only a few coupling parts needed like a resistor and small disc capacitor I think..made one for the RCM ignition that Floyd Carter and I worked on for a few years.

I also used the CH Syncro Spark with my own design CDI and it worked..so maybe a review of that and a simple design of yours would satisfy most of the requirements of TCI board users. Surely we can make this work!
