21cc Echo timing?

I just installed my first CH Ignition on a 21cc Kioritz. I searched the threads for timing degrees could not find it. Also what is the recommended prop for this size. Any additional info would be great.

My Zenoah G26 runs it's best at 28 degs. and the SuperTigre G51 and G90 do as well. My Saito 91 four stroke runs a little better up around 33 or 34. Most of the engines I've worked on liked around 26 to 28 degs so you should be safe there. I can't help on the prop.

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

Thanks-I think I'll set it between 28 and 30.

PROP Try anything in a 16 dia with low pitch or anything in 14 diam with higher pitch. It should run anyway if you have close to thoses props. Capt,n

Set it between 26 and 28,no higher than 28.Use a 15x8APC for best tresults. At least thats what mine liked.I sold one of my other ones but heres a pic of one im doing now. This one has the domed piston, not flat.Dont know if it will be better or not.Im making a header for it,ive already made a mouse can tuned pipe.

Yes,i had 2 of them but sold em.Mcmaster-carr has the taps, all 3.Starting,bottoming,and the middle one[forgot name].8x1.25 Left Hand,$7.38 each.I just havent bought any yet.[j.romine] who sells and does conversions with the rest of us her on rcu made my last 2 because he has the taps.He may have some made up already.Ill probably buy the set of all 3 for $19.00 just to do hubs for LH echos,or whatever else. You can get hold of him here:

buck1856: How did you like the 24cc echo? I had 3 short blocks. AV8TOR talked me out of 2 of them. One just a couple of weeks ago! Thanks Capt,n

I really like mine, heres a pic of my brand new one i converted a while back.Weighs 3-1/2 lbs pictured with the ign and the prop, and the muffler attached.I havent changed the carb yet.Its the stock 8mm zama and it only has 3 -10oz tanks through it and was spinning a crappy 16x8 MAS or 16x8 Dynathrust[dont remember] at about 74-7600.I bought this from a dealer,so its not the older style 24cc.It has EI in the serial number wich stands for emission. At least thats what i was told. The whole thread[dont forget echo] is based on the 24cc and Keith from BME even put the exact steps to do to make the 24cc equal to his BME 1.3 or 1.4 that was such a good seller.I downloaded it and printed it out.Av8tor built a hotrod kioritz himself,a real screamer, thats why he probably wanted yours.I have 3 more used 24cc,each one i can pull start and run perfect.Im going to be starting on them tomorrow.I also have 2 stihl 22cc that are more than likely going to be screamers and light also.Im working on them[started already].The BME mod if i remember right is within the first 10 or less pages, not hard to find.

buck1856: Hey...thanks for the reply. The photos are good and clear. Now all you need is to put it in a plane!!! Maybe you already have. Best Regards, Capt,n;)

Thanks,i put it in my GP Giles 202 ARF.1/4 scale,72ws i believe.I had an os160 in it.The echo flew it like a sport plane. Not a lot of vertical[at all].11-1/4 LBS RTF dry.Thats why theres only 3 tanks through it.Sold the plane and engine. Was thinking about putting the 24cc on my 96 inch spook.

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

Buck-set mine at 30-31 degrees and seems to run fine, best i can get out of it is 7300 on 16x6 APC. Rings are in order here. I'm going to bring the timing back to 27 and see what happens. If i loose power to a great degree, I'll move it back.
I'm just finishing a 26cc Stihl, dual ring, 4 bolt cylinder. This thing is lighter than the Echo 21cc at 2lb 2oz. Have a small issue with carb spacer-need to fabricate a new one or modify the existing. I'll post a pix when done.

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

String trimmer-Started it last night for the first time, Set the timing at 29 deg. and let her rip. used a 16x6 APC to start and would run fast (to dark for tach). 16x8 MAS tryed next and seem to heat up fast. Tach it at lunch and see. Used a #24 carb to start out, and i will go to a #28 which seem to always give more power. I'll post at lunch.

Heres the little Stihl 26, running a 16x8 MAS. Haven't tacked it yet but really spins. The #28 carb made a big difference. I have another one with a slightly shorter shaft and appears to be lighter yet. Thats next on bench.

No it was the red, white, and yellow one that tower was selling about 2 yrs ago from Great Planes.

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

That looks like a stihl 22cc.Ill take a pic of 3 of my stihl engines together and then you be the judge. What model did it come out of and did ya do an actual cylinder volume check.

frenchie79 08-10-2008 08:43 PM

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

I measured the bore and stroke-came out of an old stihl trimmer. After putting a 11mm carb on it would run 8050 to 8075 with a 16x8 classic prop. Sorry the above pictures are so big-don't have a clue what happened.
I have a 24 i'm working on that really shows promise. Good shape, real short shaft. I'll post that in a day or two.

Heres the pic of my 3 stihls.Left to right they are 22cc,26cc,28cc.The actual numbers are 21ect.25.4,and 27.2.yours might be older or newer and might be shaped different but the 22cc has the round cylinder.

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

Buck-sure looks the same, but i measured and checked several times and came up with 26. I have several 21's and a 24. The stroke was the difference. It may be a 21. Will a 21 turn a 16x8 at 8K ??

buck1856 08-12-2008 12:16 AM

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

I dont think a 21 will turn one at that but i wont say it wont.Im pretty impressed with my stihls so far as for weight and power. My 28 in the pic above has a rail mount already like a glow engine and is spinning a 17x8 at 7400 at 3000 Ft msl and i bought it used.It weighs 3.5 lbs with evrything rtf.Besides ign battery.Im sure your right its just a different motor. Its probably some stroker motor that came off of a special purpose item that is no longer built.Could also just be older like the echos that used to have round cylinders. If anything runs like that and its light who cares who makes it:D.I might see how fast i can get one of my 22cc done to see what it does, with EI.

RE: 21cc Echo timing?

Buck-I agree with you on Stihl-lite and powerfull. I have 5 or 6 of them, and 20 Kioritz engines-most are small cc-21ish. I'm working on a Stihl 24 and this looks real good. Putting in lathe time-cut the flywheel center out and trued it up, making a adjustable collar for the EI unit and a prop hub. I'll post when i get that ready. Need another magnet-have to call Terry at CH today.
