I am thinking about CONVERTING engines to diesel, perhaps a thunder tiger .46 -> deisel? But first off, the questioning...
1) In terms of acceleration, which is better? glo or deisel
2) In terms of quality running (no sputtering on low speeds, no sputtering on acceleration etc...) which is better? glo or diesel?
3) in terms of money efficiency, which is better, glo or diesel? (I fly like 8-9hrs a day, so it is very crucial info for me)
4) which is easier to maintain?
5) which is less costly to maintain?
6) which is more powerful?
7) which can go faster?
8) if I decide to mix my own fuel...
8a) is it cheaper to just by the mixed stuff
8b) is ether the only thing that can be used for its purpose?
8c) is it possible to add something to diesel fuel for autos, (the stuff at gas stations) and use that mixture for model engines?
I appreciate any input.

Check out this post change to 180 days back many good answers anything left unanswered ask.. not being a wise guy but many of these are answered in depth by folks with a lot of knowledge in closing the TT46 makes a great conversion great choice )have one davis head) martin

As I statedTT46 great choice\\
accerelation I would say same as a well tuned 4 strk Must be on they use them in 3D
mount it sideways and no fuel builds up in crankcase goodby sputtering Modern 2 strokes far better for this than the "classics"
Diesel much more efficent about twice the run time on same size tank as glow
maintance next to 0-- I use davis fuels since no nitro or alcohol I have NEVER used after run oil in them kero prevents rust
and of course no glow plugs
by adjusting compression less for bigger props more for smaller ones easy to time engine for prop no adding or removing head shims
right heat glow plug what nitro% to run etc etc
diesels do put out more power a 40 diesel conversion equiv to a 60 on glow (davis has proved this for at least
the last 25 years)
speed is relative you do have high speed racing classes in control line 15s come to mind big in UK and Europe
FUEL you can buy Davis mixes for about $20 a gallon but remember will run as long as 2 gallons of glow at$11 or more
they do not run on pump diesel the large diesel uses injectors running very high pop off pressures in excess of 1000PSI to mist the fuel into the cylinders My thoughts on fuel mixing risky buy it available in all of USA from Davis and Tower martin

I have a Thunder Tigre 46 conversion also.
It turns a 13 x 8 APC at 8800.
I have a TT 51 also and am thinking of swaping it out with the 46, but
the 46 run so good. I hate to mess with perfection.
My friends are amazed at how eazy it starts, and the size of prop it requires.

Larger props turning slower are more efficent than smaller one screaming away thrust is what counts also the larger ones get well
beyond the fus into "clean air" less noise less fuel wear factor way down prop speeds on full scale planes "slow" 1800 -2200' I think
even most 4 strk glow engines run at 10K or less again big props' also our gas engines 6800 to 7500 or so granted you have
your screaming jetts and rossi but for 90% of us we do not use them since we are flying sport ,, acrobatics, scale and 3D,
this where diesel really stand out
Of course they are some high speed diesels russian team race, paw has some tuned small diesels but at least for me a modern
2 strk conversion fills the bill quite nicely along with enyas new releases for most of us that use this post nothing new just hope
this gives a little info to the folks who never tried it or had questions about it martin

Covetski,
Please forgive me for partially disagreeing with dieseldan. BUT. Diesel does not increase hp much, a big prop increased airframe performance. Diesel is cooler running. Diesel is more frugal but not half the fuel consumption. A 10 oz glow tank for 15 minutes will be a 6oz diesel tank for 17 minutes. My Mecoa .47 turned a mas 11*6 at 13K rpm and ran 20 minutes+ on a 8 oz tank. My TT GP .42 turns a mas 11*6 at 11,200 rpm for 15 minutes on a 4 oz tank of diesel. With skillful tuning throttle response can be quite good but extended idling can have a slight delay especially when cold. Buy Davis plane fuel from www.omnimodels.com for the lowest cost. Free shipping over $100.00 and NO Has-mat!!!!!!! Diesels sound like a small Harley at idle and my MECOA .46 made a cool two stroke motor cycle sound at part throttle and great acceleration.
Try it you will like it.

Francis,
Thanks for the tip...I had never heard of Omni before.
Though, looks like Davis Diesel Fuel is "Discontinued" at Omni too!

What's up with this?
