I have been flying O.S. conversions for about 8 years now. I have personally found no real performance difference between a ringed engine, and one that is not of the same type, and size.
BUT, I do find the ABCs are easier to start. It seems the ringed engines, just don't have the compression needed when they are cold to start easy.
I have an O.S. SF-40 that started out as a ringed engine, then got turned into an ABC, when the ring broke on me. I had to change both piston and sleeve to do it. But now life is much better. Now it pulls my Big Stick around, swinging a 11x7 APC at 10500 RPM static. Things should get better as it gets broke in again.
