Default Q40 Racer!

Just picked this up on a trade, looks like a candidate for my OS .46VRDF. Not sure what it is, hopefully Ed Smith can help me out on that one.

It says "Sattlers Panther" on the nose. Harold Sattler is the guy for Q40's in Canada with several designs over the years. I'm guessing its a Panther, but not sure I've ever heard of one. It is definately one of Ed's old planes, I believe that is his companies name on the side "avia tool design".

It's Harold Sattler's FAI pylon design from the 90's. The NACA duct on the top of the nose tells me it was set up for the rear intake engines that were used up through the late 90's. I think all the Canadians flew them at the 97 & 99 World Champs, which Ed was a member on.

Yes the exhaust exits under the fuse, and I did a mock fit with the 46vrdf engine w/ rear intake and it looks like its going to fit.

I know this plane is probably not a big deal to some of you vet pylon racers....and I know it should go in the pylon forum, but its exciting for me to finally get my hands on one of these that I could afford, and this is where I hang out, I just hope it all pans out.

Awesome find SRV! I would feel the same way you do. Get that thing going and enjoy it.

Heck put a TT.40 in it and you can race with DaveN

The only thing I need is a header, I have a pipe and a bunch of APC q40 carbon props (7.4x8.25) squirreled away that were just waiting for this type of air frame to come along.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]
So once I get a header for the engine, I will do some bench running for breakin and tuning.

Freaking fast did a thread on the 46VX-DF, (which I have saved in my subscribed threads)...but this is the VR-DF, so I would imagine the performance is lacking a little in comparison, but I'm wondering how close it is with prop sizes and type of header pipe set-up etc...Freaking Fast could you maybe shed some light on this? I'm really pumped about this project.
Thanks

heres a pic of it

Thanks for the pics Ifinney...I wonder what the advantage is with the mods to the rotor and backplate? I'll have to take mine apart to see what it is.

I'm almost finished building the motor mount for it out of billet AL, kind of a custom jobby to fit it in the plane.

the main issue was longevity, some of the early pins wore quickly, and the rotors as well, its not such a big issue in racing as the engine runtime is small, but with sport flyers and ducted fan users it becomes a bigger issue, there were reports of the set screw coming loose and the the pin and assembly wad up the internals of the engine...

Ok moven' right along....did a little modifying to fit the 46 VRDF, made a billet mount for it and some standoffs to allow space for the intake, so I had to remove the original firewall and make a new one about half an inch back farther to allow space for intake. I also tapped a couple of holes on the front of the beams to tie them in to the nose with some ply.

Thanks for the compliment.... you can't really buy a mount to fit this engine/plane combo without mods to it, so making one to suit was the option.
