for late evening Wonder fun as the sun sets on the flying field build a Wonder with a .15 3 HS-81 a 270 Mah battery and feather Rx build it light! fly it on the deck at a high ilde. Low and slow give the "park flyers" a show 20 minutes on just a few oz.

you can't be more right !!

Check with "Dave Boy" under Speed Freaks page 2, his modified wonder does 187 MPH with a OS 25 ducted fan modifed engine. I have seen the results on that one.

My number 17 wonder, Just throw a OS 32 SX with a 7.8X6 pylon prop, 15% nitro and UltraThrust Muffler with a stock unmodified Wonder and you will hit +150 MPH plus

I find that IMPOSSIBLE to believe, not just hard. The reason is due to teh fact i have had 2 Wonders with )S32's and they got 100 on a good day. There is NO WAY a pipe will add 50+ MPH. I am not trying to dog anyone or call anyone a lier, but for my 25FSR and 2, OS32 wonders, all I did was fully sheet the wing and add front wing bolts. my 25FSR with a mac pipe went 88, and liek i said i could hit 100-101 with tthe 32's, but noway coulda pipe add 50+.

Guys, no need to get all bent out of shape here. Every so often a plane/pilot comes aboard with amazing claims of speed. Whether or not they are correct, the pilot has sufficient reason to believe they are. I would not personally put much credence in the readings of a radar gun, but many do. So I say let them have their claim to fame..it's not hurting anybody if they claim an excessive speed unless you are bent upon setting a speed record. What difference does it make if the guy claims his Shrike will do 200?? Not a bit.

nice one

from what i can see you didn' shortened the nose section as i suggested. That's why u can't balance without a big servo in the back

36 oz is a very decent weight, nice work, be sure to have some extra elevator throw ready to flare it, keep up post about the maiden flight !

SALMOMBUG, The picture must be deciving... I did shorten the nose by 1/2 inch. not exactly sure what i did up front that added weight.... oh well the 425 is kinda comforting anyway, no way in hell is that little ele gona strip it out!!!!! my throws should be ok, 3/8 on ele 3/8 on ele to start.

Off to the field, I'm leaving with 3 complete palnes..... lets hope they stay that way!!

I just come back from the field. I flown my .25 wonder, you will have fun !!!
by looking to my .25 wonder and a stock .15 I have here near me, I can see that in fact you shortened the nose, sorry for my bad interpretation of what I saw

here is a pic of a long nose kissing a short nose

trY to understand something altough the .25 as 1/2 inche shorter nose than the stock .15la
the nose look longer [X(]

I get a kick out of speed claims.,, By my calculator, an 8 pitch prop turning 20000 rpm , with absolutely no slippage, an impossibility, adds up to 151 mph. At least if a statue mile is still 5280 feet. 151 aint 200. I'd say 125 tops is more like it.

well........ IT FLEW!!!!!!
dam thing does warp 9! how's that for a speed claim It flew fairly well... I think I need a bit more down thrust though. as for speed I'm guessing it's doing around 90 or so, sure as hell looks faster!!! this little bugger is a bit squirly at full throttle.I trimed it at half throttle, when I open it up it really wants to climb and it seems as though I'm fighting up thrust with the ele. other than the thrust issue it rolls well and flys fairly doscile at half throttle or so. landing was uneventful other than the fact I'm landing on dirt.... after 3 landings the bottom skid's are loose( I used Large screw mount wingtip skids), a grass field would be better for the plane. I'm gona give it 2 degrees more down fix up the skids and try it again next weekend.

BTW I came back with all 3 planes, there were however 3 at the field that didn't. one was fixable the other 2 went in full bore...... airframes were wasted and one guy's motor looked to be toast, bent crank for sure. I hate to see crashes.... I'm just glad it was not ME.

congrat for your maiden flight.[sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

90 Mph is a correct estimation for a.25 wonder, maybe a bit less (plane is small so it look faster). tilt a bit down the engine is good idea, I did it on mine and forgot to mention it

well I hate to say it...my wonder is flying no more. I made the thrust adjustment and flew it this morning, plane fly's much better. hand launches are very easy with the .25, on the last one I made I just held it by the canopy throttled up and let go. with the extra down thrust (5 degrees now)it's much more stable in pitch/throttle use, although I think 1 or 2 degrees more would have it perfect. my biggest problem and the reason it will fly no more is the landings. the desert dry lake I fly from is just to dam hard on the bottom of the plane.... and yes I know how to land!!!! after 4 flights today the balsa/ply mix I used on the bottom is cracked and loose around the skids. with out the skids it may be better spreading the force over the entire bottom but then who knows. the plane was fun to build and fly... it turned out fairly well in the looks department and I'd like to keep it that way...so it will hang on the wall untill I move or find a nice big grass patch thats safe to fly from.

SALMONBUG, I though about doing just that. I'm also considering just scratching a new fuse since my hor/vert stabs are bolt on. If i build a new fuse I'll replace the balsa 3/32 and 1/32 ply skin laminate I used with real 3/32 ply in the skid locations. the ply should hold the load much better without cracking like the balsa/ply laminate does. I have a bad feeling that IF I had used the "plan" skid it would have worked out much better than my large bolt on wing tip skids..... of course it would not be replaceable. My idea for the skids will work.... it just needs a stronger base to work from.

John,

Just go out and get one used circus net, cut the power hold the nose up and plop into the net !

the wonder is too much fun not to fly!!!!!

what i have done to balance is two mini servos under the stab, Elevator should be a metal gear...hitek HS81s cannot be back driven... or mount a 4th servo on top of the stab for rudders. if you have to add weight the make it work for you.

I have done a lot of things trying to get my wonder to go 100mph+++

The latest attempt is an Norvel AME 25 BB with a 9x7 prop!!

The weather hasn't been cooperating. As soon as it does I'll fly it and let you all know how it flies.

I think I can judge the speed within 10 or 15 mph, however, it is a lot smaller than my GP F-15 with a Jett 90. That plane doesn't top 100, too much frontal area

Had a wonder once. The only plane I have ever seen that would not pick up speed in a dive.

I've been flying the Wonder with a Norvel AME 25. I started with an apc 9/4, the same prop we use in combat, not enough revs. I tried an apc 8/7 next, ran pretty good, pretty fast.
Next was an apc 8/8, tach'd out at about 13,500 on the ground, not fast enough!
Switched to an apc 8/6, tach'd out at 15,900 to 16,000 on the table, looked real fast in the air!!!

The one question I have from all you math wiz folks, what is the formula for speed using the rpm's and the prop pitch? I know that the formula only works in a perfect world, you have to take into account drag, weight and all of the atmospheric conditions, however it give you a starting point.

Does anybody have that formula?

Thanks in advance,

Ken

Well after trashing mine due to a radio prob this summer, does anyone have a copy of the plan they could let me have, please ?

I've looked all over the house and cant find it for love nor money.......I just love this plane so I'd like to build another during the winter months.

Does anybody have that formula?

If I remember correctly, in long form, it is:

RPM X Pitch = inches per minute
Inches per minute x 60 = inches per hour
Inches per hour / 12 = feet per hour
feet per hour / 5280 = miles per hour

RPM X Pitch X 60 / 12 / 5280 = MPH

I think that simplifies to RPM X Pitch / 0.00094697
