Which Jett 50 to buy????????
Just bought a whip and not sure which engine to power it with. I have a piped 46FX on the shelf, but would like to "join the Jett club". Should I choose the 50 FIRE or the 50 Sport. I realize the FIRE is more streamlined but the Sport has greater adaptability to other planes in the future. ??????????????????

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
Either engine will keep you happy. In the long run, your engine choice may depend on the width and density you desire for the resulting skid mark in your shorts
In the short term, your choice criteria is this......
Standard SJ-50 or BSE-50 side exhaust - Whiplash goes fast. Use 9x8, 9x9, and some of the D-1 racing props. Muffler us tuned for 16k-18K, somewhat broad range, and your prop selection based on keeping in between those numbers. No pipe hassles, just bolt on and fly. Cost less. As you noted, configuration and prop range makes it verastile in other aircraft should you desire.
FIRE-50 or FIRE BSE-50 -Whiplash goes faster. RE looks a bit nicer too. The engine requires a full pipe and header (cost extra). Std pipe, Marine pipe, Quiet pipe... your selelction based on needs. Dub provides engine/pipe combination tuned and ready to run. Pipe does produced more power and higher rpm, but most importantly is tunable to props/rpm of your chosing. Dub tunes to an rpm, and you have to prop the engine to remain at/near that rpm for best performance. All of this will result in a faster aircraft. Engine is also available with a higher-timed sleeve (option).... makes the engine turn up higher, at the expense of some user-friendliness.
Any questions, I am always here to help

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
Thanks for your answers Bob. I think it would probably be wiser for me to choose the sport Jett for this first speed plane. I think the setup of the side exhaust will be more versatile in the long run. Then, maybe in the future I can swap the engine into a F-20 or any other plane for that matter and get a FIRE for the Delta wings if I choose to keep one of these planes in my hangar in the future.
Thanks

There are three mufflers you can get for the SJ 50. You have the standard muffler like bob was talking about but you can get the shorter Super Sport (SS) muffler or the very short Q-500 muffler. The Q-500 muffler would probably restrict you to the Quickie 8.8 and 8.75 pylon props but the SS muffler worked well with the 9x8 and other sport props along with pylon props. I have had two Sport Jett engines and they are powerful and durable.

for fly-guy's reference, the SS muffler is the sport racing muffler, Tuned for 17.5K to 19.5K rpm range (higher rpm range than the std jettstream muffler). Engine runs the same, you just have to select smaller props that keep you in that range. The short 428 Q-500 racing muffler is tuned for 18.5K to 21.5K rpm.

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
Thanks for all the info Bob and Mike. I think I will be giving Dub Jett a call real soon. It looks like the BSE is a pretty good deal at only $35 dollars more that the SJ. No added performance gains aside from a little less weight, am I right? What is a better choice for the Whip? Do they tend to balance out tail heavy or nose heavy? I have to think that people are having to do things slightly different as some are putting tuned pipes on them which adds weight to the back, and others are using Jett SS mufflers or Macs pipes which would keep more of the weight in the nose.

I believe Mike is correct, the BSE is a tiny bit heavier.. but not a huge amount. You will have no issues hitting the CG with either engine, lots of either type out there in deltas.
The majority of the Whiplash owners I communicate with have RE engines.
here is an example of each configuration (some folks might recognize these )

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
My Whiplsh has the SJ-50SE because I like to be able to put the Jett on a Patriot or quickee or something... Besides I am too poor to have both-[X(] because the Rear ex. clearly performs better and looks the part-
The CG on the Whip is VERY easy to hit- the battery compartment has enough space to move the RX and RX Batt. around- and I have my Jett-50 as far back on the beams as I could get.... Same essential weight and spac of my OS-46FX that USED to be on there- (a bit more power however )
Keep us posted!
Oh yeah, do NOT use a plastic spinner on the Whip

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
Thanks for all the help guys! Still having a hard time making a decision. Good thing I have till' Monday. I guess Jett was closed today, I called to order an engine and see what Dub's input was. Really leaning towards the SJ so I can use it in other planes in the future. But, boy doesn't the FIRE just look at home on the Whip! I think that the SJ 50 with the SS muffler is what I will order. Then, in the future, I might buy the FIRE for the Whip and swap the SJ onto a F-20, Patriot , or my Sonic 500. I will keep you posted and show some pics when I can

Well boys, just got off the phone with Dubb and ordered the SJ 50. Very nice guy. Also nice to deal with the owner of a business, its good customer relations. I just may get my speed # soon. My whip should arrive any day now as well. Can't wait. Bob if you are still following these posts thanks for all your time and help. I made sure I told Dub you were a big help to me.

Glad to be of help.....
Dub is sorta a one-man-show down there most of the time. I take some of the load off of him replying to emails and such, and handling what I can on-line in forums like this. Keeps us both busy.

Bob,
Very quick question about the Carb on the Jett on the Green and White Whip.
What type of carb is that, the reason that I ask is because I've just bought a Super Sport Jett 40 with the same carb and haven't seen one before.

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
I see in some above posts the mentioning of Dub Jett in them. I have just done business for the first time with Dubb (Jett Engineering) and I have to say I was very pleased with his service. I believe I will be doing more business with him. I appreciate good service and that is what I received from Dub. Thanks, Don...

The key in the design there was getting the spraybar out of the carb throat area. So it became a hybrid of the black Q-500 "air valve" carb and the regular red carb. The SS carb is good for about an extra 300-500 rpm on the top end, compaired to the standard Jett carb.

You had to post a pic of my green whip. Just wish I had gotten in more flights with it. That Jett .50 is the best running engine I own. It helped my Spitfire to 1st place in last years local warbird race in the unlimited class.

Thanks for the answer bob, it sounds like it's just what I wanted.
I'm going to mount it in a Q500 plane so it should be at home

RE: Which Jett 50 to buy????????
Just read your thread. Glad to see you with the BSE 50. I bought one to puch club racing rules to the limit. Was fast out of the box. In playing with props, I pulled the rear end off the aircraft in a dive. Back to the building board. My YS 63 in a U Can Do just wore itself out Sent it in for a rebuild. Club had a fun fly coming up, no YS. Ok, push the envelop and stick in the BSE Jett 50. The YS is back, but the Jett is still in the U Can Do. With a 11-4 apc, the power is better, and the transition is better than you can with for! Hover and torque rolls are simply much easier to control. The thing just ticks away at any RPM you ask of it. Thats the good part, bad part is I have to save my pennies for another Jett 50. Have their 35 and 90L, all run better than anything I have ever had in my few years experience in this hobby (55 years yea, old!) enjoy enjoy enjoy
