I would agree, I have an Evo from BigBruceracing.com

With everything running right, with no wind. 210mph in level flight and 230mph in a dive turning 32,000-33,000rpm.

Razor hit the nail on the head.. The delta's and Magnum's and planes of that sort are pretty fast but if you're talking all out speed then the F3D, QM-40 pylon planes or something that's built for the Speed Cup have it.. Of coarse, those dynamic soaring things are something else, no engine and 300 mph..

That is too big a question to answer with a general statement.....

are you talking sport plane?
ARF?
Kit built?
Custom Built?
No limit on cost or complexity? (in which the FAI F3D planes are the correct answer, as noted)

Making an assumption off of your question, you are looking toward what we would consider sport-speed planes. Define here as something fairly common, and the engine has a functioning throttle.

In which case... the Whiplash had held a bit of an edge, but it is no longer available. A few were documented in the 200mph range with Jett power and a good pilot, coming out of a very long vertical dive. In most cases the level flight top end was in the 160mph range.

The Phenom, from appearances and technial reports, should be able to come close to the Whiplash performance. To be verified.

The Magnum with the West 50 or Jett SJ-50 engine, properly set up, will push 150 mph on a good day. Sometimese a bit quicker in a dive.

A standard Q-500 with a Thunder Tiger .40 Pro and a 9x6 - dead stock (424 racing setup) will get up to around 120mph level flight.
(GP Viper or Lanier Predator II are good ARFs for this application)

Same Q-500 airframe with a TT46Pro, jett-stream muffler, and a 9x7 will push 140 mph. Switch to a Jett SJ-50 engine and push 150.

Same type of Q-500 plane (better, composite wing) with a racing Q-500 .40 engine will fly level flight at 160+ mph.

A standard QM40 racinging airframe with a sport Jett SJ-60LX up front an a 8.8x9.25 prop (perhaps clipped to 8.25" dia) will exceed 170mph.

As you can see... there is more than one answer to your question.

But we are all here to help --- lots to learn and understand.

Bob

Beyond this, you are talking about custom designed or specialty aircraft.

bob27, sounds like you know your stuff. mostly what i want is around a good 40 size which sounds like most of the real fast planes are around that power range. would really rather have an ARF. considering i haven't really had a TRUE speed plane do you think the Mach Racer (which i have right now) and a Weston Magnum which i am planning to get in a month or so, would be good planes to fly till i get the fell of going 120+. cause right now at our feild other than the occasional jet that comes out there sometimes, 130-140 is prolly the fastest speed the any planes out there will go. around the fall i would like to be going 180+.

To go fast with an ARF and have landing gear you may want to consider a Viper or Predator Q500 job. You will go fast enough to scare the average club members using a .46 FX or TT.40. This option is kinda on the cheap too.

Yeah, a Magnum will keep you happy. Its a good plane, and not too bad of a combo deal with the engine. Although, for some reason I cant seem to get into Westons website today.

The Mach Racer is quick, if you leave the landing gear off. Construction is ok, but its not really designed for flying much over the 120 mph range.

Simple, easy way to go fast, as noted, is to get a great planes Viper (q-500 ARF). Good plane. Easy to assemble. And then it is up to you to decide what you want for power. (ie, how fast do you want to go?). If you are looking for the 150 mph range, look towards a Jett SJ50 engine, or try to locate a used 428 Q-500 engine, either Jett .40 or Nelson .40 - no throttle, only a shut off ----- but on occation there are some good bargans to be found with 'retired' racing engines.

Angel's Rifle would fit the bill also--- much cooler than a Viper or Predator.

i'll check out that angel's rifle. aint never heard of it. i'll do some searches and see what i find.

what i really like to do is come about 2 feet or less off the runway engine screamin about 10 feet from the fence and make everyone duck under the tables. i've knocked my antenna off one time with my magic when i had someone that wuoldn't leave me alone standin next to me. needless to say he didn't bother me while i was flyin no more.

I just ordered a VIPER. I plan to put my JETT BSE .35 ABC on it. I was planning to use an APC 8.5 X 7.0 Pylon prop.
What speeds can I expect from this plane with this configuration? I'm using 15% 2/4 stroke fuel.

As far as cool looking speed, I think its kind of hard to beat Q40's.

dirtmagnet,

Here is the thread on the Rifle:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2473270/tm.htm

"Angel" is really AngelRCDesign (I think it is, it's in the thread). He sells short kits, ARC and ARF versions. You need to contact him and see about delivery of whatever you like.

As a speed comparison, Dub and a few others have raced against 424 prepared Q500 aircraft ( TT40 pro power) while using the BSE35 on the same planes (vipers). All using the standard 9x6 prop. The .35 was quicker

So based on that, figure that 120 mph is a significant possiblity, perhaps a bit better.

The key to making the .35 really perform, is propping it so it runs right around 17,000 rpm peak on the ground. Back off 600 rpm for flight. I think the 8.5x7 should put you in that general range - although may be worth trying the 8.5x7.25 too.

Bob,

With that light little engine he can also clip several inches off each wing and gain a fair bit of useful speed and still keep the wingloading reasonable... I would start with 4" off each tip, I think.

Q40's are tough to beat, but not cheap.

Heres my favorite.
