No guy is happy with chaffing in the saddle area[sm=what_smile.gif]
I like the silicone idea/technique and will most likely give it a try. No work on it for a few days till I get back home. I'm going to need at least 3oz of poison metal to the tail to get a decent balance too.
I'm pretty excited to fly this thing but it will most likely be about two weeks before I can.[8D]

RE: UK Magnums
I had to add a little under 1 oz to the tail. I acually cut open the botom of the fuse towards
the rear and shoved in a 4 cell 4.8v 200mah Nimh battery pack back there. I tried to get the battery
as far back as I possibly could. Look at post 81 that is where my battery is.I HATE ADDING LEAD to anything to get it to balance.
I wish I thought of the RTV silicone for the wing saddle. It would look much better then
the black foam hanging out.

RE: UK Magnums
You guys with Jett 50's need to look at Dub's integral 2" spinner! I used one on my Magnum and it worked great. There's a photo of it in my profile, if you want to see how it looks. I also "cleaned up" the cowl and snugged it up around the engine, and clipped down the throttle arm to get it and the linkage tucked inside the cowl.

RE: UK Magnums
Unfortunately that Magnum is no more. Well... I've still got a repairable wing and the turtledeck left of it, and the Jett .50 was thankfully unscathed. It was the first flight with a new bubbleless tank that indirectly did it in. I had been flying it for some time with the stock tank. It ran absolutely fantastic with the bubbleless tank... until the 6 oz were suddenly gone and it quit without warning. It was headed away and too far out to make it back to the field (the Magnum has about the highest wing loading and lowest glide ratio of any model airplane I've ever owned or seen) and I clipped a tree while valiantly trying, taking the wing off in the process. I won't have another Magnum ready in time for the event on the 28th, but I've got one NIB from when they were being dumped on the 'bay, and one very used from someone here on the RCU forums.

I got my spinner but need to make a bushing for the backplate before I start doing the real balancing.
Too bad about your plane Mike, you'll just have to watch Seth and I chase each other around with ours. We had a fun day Sunday afternoon, him with his .46FX/nelson pipe Magnum and my 424 Predator. He was a little disappointed that he didn't own me in the air.[>:]

RE: UK Magnums
I am not that surprised that the 424 Predator (assuming TT.40 and stock muffler) was faster than the Magnum with the .46FX and tuned muffler. In spite of its sleek looks, the Magnum is a draggy airframe, and I am not just talking about the exposed linkages, the blunt firewall edge up top, and the blunt trailing edges on the tail. Those can all be corrected (I know, it's supposed to be an ARF). It's the basic design. That small thin wing has to generate a similar amount of lift as the Q500, since the weight is similar. The small wing area and the thin airfoil are working against you in that department. The Q500 wing is much more efficient, due to the lower wing loading and the superior airfoil. The only way to get the same lift from the Magnum wing (without resorting to more engine power or a design change to the airframe) is with a higher angle of attack and therefore more drag and less speed. I don't doubt that a modified Magnum with a little more wing area and/or a thicker/better airfoil would go substantially faster than a stock Magnum with the same engine and prop. This is all talking about level flight, or high-G turns, of course, the Magnum ought to easily eat the Q500's lunch in a steep dive!

Good Luck on the maiden, let us know how it went. I hate to say but I am going to have
to yank the jett 60 out of the magnum in the next couple of days
and put it in the patriot. So the magnum will be on the shelf for a while.[:'(]
I also have some video of the magnum just waiting to get it from
the person who recorded it.Hope to get it soon

Everything went smooth!
I must've got the CG right cause I didn't need any elevator trim and a few clicks of aileron and off I went. In fact on the second flight I dialed in a little more thro for low and high rates to get the thing to come around for me.
SJ .50 with a 9X8, I didn't have the needle set just right but had one haulin A run before things got slower. I will burn a few more tanks tomorrow to get prop and needle set for max fun.
It landed like a dream too.
Also I did loose some of the trim covering on the fuse. The wing pieces held good. I went over all the edges with acetone and heat in an attempt to keep things in place.

RE: UK Magnums
Good Job, Vic!
I got the best speed out of my Magnum with the APC 8.75x9W, and Super Sport Jett-Stream muffler. The launches were sometimes a little hairy, since that prop doesn't really start to pull hard until you get the speed up, but once it is moving, it never runs out of steam!

My Jett has been around for a while. I don't know how well it would take an over square prop. I've got a few to try though. The tricky part is getting the needle right to be lean enough on the ground but give enough fuel to really unload in the air. If that makes any sense...
I guess Saturday will be the right time to tell which one is the best eh?[sm=49_49.gif][sm=wink_smile.gif]

RE: UK Magnums
I am back from my South Dakota trip now, so I plan to come to the event on Saturday. Not sure what I'll be flying though. ATM, nothing flightworthy in the hangar qualifies for "extreme speed". I'll come up with something though.
