Thats actually a good idea on the control linkage.

Has been done before (RC kits T-38 if I recall correctly had a stab/servo setup like that).

If that R/C Kits T-38 is a propjet, I have one of those kits in my kit pile. I'll have to dig it out and take a look. Why didn't I think of that before...thanks Bob!

I remember seeing the kit in a hobby shop probably 20 years ago (I really don't know but it was a long time ago) but I never purchased it. I found one on e-bay last year and it's a keeper. Only bad thing is the canopy is missing. I'll be making a foam/glass replacement as I don't have a vacu-former. It's a big plane. 6 feet long, 44 inch wingspan.

You'll be getting kits, Pete...just be patient. I'll get around to it.....SOMEDAY! (LOLOLOLOL)
It's going to be Christmas in Canada later this year.

Rich ..Q for you ... What kind and make of servo did you use in the wing?

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

I used the Hitec HS-5475HB Digital for the ailerons. It is the first Digital servo I have used. It is a good servo.... however if I was going to do it again I would get either a HS-475HB(non-digital version of the same servo) or a HS-635HB. the 5475 is $35 the 475 is $18.

I will probably not buy digital servos again. The centering is great but the servo output is in didgits as the name suggests.... it tends to have a ratchety motion as opposed to a smooth motion... I can see and feel the difference.

I think the 475's and 635's are the way to go!

Cool ... I will go with the 635's all the way around ..thanks

You guys have done it to me with this thread - I just ordered my Flanker. Question for Rich - Does the Jett .90 fit on the DB 60s mount? Also - do you have a picture of the bottom? Thanks. G.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

Yes, I actually used the DB 60 mount.... not the 90 mount. The reason I used it is because there was a typo in the SU-27 instructions. The list of items needed in the begining indicates to use a 60 mount when it was intended to be a 90 mount! I had already mounted the engine and blind-nutted the mount by the time I realized the error.... but no harm done....both will work. I did have to widen out the 60 mount a little to get the Jett 90 to fit. The Jett 90 is a 60 sized engine!

here is a pic of the botton... not a great pic... I can take a better one if you need one!

WOW - thanks for the quick reply. I was concerned that the 90s might not fit in the nose. I might do the same basic 585 scheme. Maybe try to make the " engines" a little rounder and silver color.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

I used the DB90 mount and had no problems with it ...had to use the full length of the support arms ( almost ) to keep the right clearance for the spinner ...the width was OK.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

Thanks guys ,i'll get a 90s mount. How about control horns and hinges? Rich - did I see where you used some WM Tri-horns and CA hinges? G.

RE: AKM SU-27 Flanker-Does Look Good

I used great planes CA hinges. They seem to be stronger than the rest.... have had flutter in many planes and have not seen one fail... yet!

actually, I did find that the DB60 mount gave me a lot more overall clearance in the nose. I think the red, white and blue Flanker scheme is the best looking out of any I have seen!

Here is another paint scheme that is kinda cool!

Looking at the plans for the SU-27. I was wondering if changing the aluminium wing tube with a carbon fiber one would make that much of a difference?

Capt G. - I believe in over powering my models... But do you really think a Jett 90 is the answer for this one.

For those contemplating an engine mount.....

Keep in mind, the Jett .90L is a "60" size engine. Same size (and weight basically) as an OS61FX and OS91FX, and utilizes the same mounting pattern.

In any case, the Flanker is best powered by one of the small-block "90" engines currently available. Alex (designer) will be the first to tell you that. OS, ST, Jett, ASP, Magnum, TT, Evo 100 .... take your pick. Its a big plane. Needs some power in the nose.

There are a great number of larger prop-jets flying with the Jett 76 and 90L engines. I think Rich's plane is a good example of why the 90L is an excellent match-up in this particular design.

Any engine will work... But you will get the most out of your plane with a JETT! The JETT will make your plane the BEST it can be! My wife just got me one of those new CERMARK F-16's for my birthday. I had seen the plane fly on a video post on RCU recently. It appeared to fly fantastic with a magnum .91.

The JETT will make it better.... BY FAR!!

The engine comment was about Capt G's little plastic model kit picture... I totally agree that a 90 or up is def needed for this bird. I will try to word my jokes better next time...

Ah........ better understood now :)

I think the Jett .35 will be enough for the small one [&:]

Rich and Don

I have finished redoing the whole back end of the SU ... 1) redone the rudders with epoxy bearings, 4/40 rod across the fuse and 635 servo .. 2) reworked the control rods for the elevators ( no slop ), 635 servos on both elevators .... and to be on the safe side.... removed the extended elevator width that I had built in.

COME on weekend :D time for another test flight ...well after I have had a couple flight on the MIG just to get tuned up :)

Test Flight? What's that? LOL. Looks good, can't wait to read the flight report.

See you in chat today if you get a chance, Pete. I finally get a whole weekend to work on the MiG's covering. I actually have th urge to monokote, can you imagine?
