Default Servo issue....

Got a servo problem in my Giles 202 140 (by TT)

Very nice plane, bought it for 3d. Put the WRONG servos in it for sure, HS-635's right across the board. Third flight on it EVER (same with the servos, only two weeks old) wnt in to a vertical climb and did a snap roll at the top and guess what? Right aileron servo stripped. It was the idler gear (the one in the middle). Does anyone know if the 625 or 645 metal gears fit in the 635 box? I don't want to buy all new servos, if I can swap to metal gears that would be awesome.

$16ea for metal gears, $36ea for 635's, hmm I guess I should have just spent the money on more suitable servos....

TIA
Marc

After doing more research, I've read some contradictory posts on here about karbonite gears saying they don't like "shock". Mine have not lasted long enough to experience shock. And also that they should not be in anything heavier than twelve pounds, but the box says 1/4 scale applications.

My servo box states:

"KARBONITE Gear Train-
KARBONITE gears are four times stronger than
conventional white resin gears, and they are
less likely to strip under the shock and loads that
would usually break standard gears"

"APPLICATIONS
-Sport and high performance aircraft
to 1/4 scale"

My Giles 202 is not covered under hitec warranty even if their product would have caused a crash (thank the Man that I was able to land with one aileron in that crosswind in one piece). So I'm a little unnerved now....

Some of the claims on the box are just plain *WRONG*.

Karbonite *is* stronger than nylon but it is most certainly not suited to any application where there's going to be any kind of shock-loading of the geartrain (ie: high vibration with big control surfaces).

I don't know what your consumer laws are like but here in NZ, Hitec would likely be liable for losses.

Karbonite is okay when used within its *actual* limitations (rather than the claimed ones).

My HS475HB servos work just brilliantly.

Sorry to hear about the problem. Unfortunately the 635's cannot be switched to metal gears.

Mike,

Being that I bought the servos new from Great Hobbies less than 2 weeks ago is it safe to say that the Karbonite gears are under warranty?

Thanks,
Marc

Unfortunately, gears and batteries are items that are not covered under warranty. However, if you send them in explaining the situation we will most likely replace them for you this one time.

Mike, i'm thinking of using hs 77bb's in a somewhat tight space pull pull rudder and double pull pull elevator custom build. 50oz would be more than enough but i dont know if a pull pull system causes any problems to the servos. any advice would be appreciated. thanks ricky.

Ricky- In th future please make a new post to ask a question instead of tagging it on to a dead thread. Thanks!

A Pull/Pull set up will have no ill affects on a servo.

Mike.
