Dalotel?

You need to increase the throw some. We had to push the carb open to get enough air into it to idle. Evidently enough crud blew out of it, and now it is back where is should be. I would set the carb closed with the trim all the way down. Half trim should be landing trim, and above that would be fast idle. I always like a faster idle while flying aerobatics just to make myself feel better. You need to set up a high idle/low idle switch on your radio and use the trainer switch for a throttle cut. That way you dont have to run the digital trim up and down every flight, and you know exactly where everything is RPM wise. As an alternattive, you can program one of your sliders as a pseudo throttle trim so you have more finite throttle trim adjustment.

Photos of Hanno's TOC Dalotel...courtesy of Steve Maxwell
I just found these next door at the RCU Pattern chapter...I do not recall ever seeing photos like the ones provided by Steve Maxwell. Pretty cool color scheme as well.
Hanno is using (2) aileron servos.

Don't know why I didn't think about this sooner but...
LaCerne is correct. D&L makes some good looking planes/kits that are designed for precision aerobatics. Besides two sizes (40, 60) of Dalotels they haveStampe and Tiger Moth bipes and a CAP or two. Most are lazer cut shortkits and there are a few ARCs. The 60 size Dalotelreally is. Sixty size I mean. At 67" x 750 sq. inchand <8 pounds, a good classic 10cc pattern engine/pipe should do it justice. He sells on that big auction sight. Some of you may find this series of numbers interesting:350079245603.

Over the past few years, I have designed, built and successfully flown a 1/4 scale 81" Dalotel. The prototype F-PPZE was powered by a RCS 1.4 gasser, had Century Jet retracts and was covered with Century 21 fabric. It had a foam wing.It came in at 14.5 lbs and flew well. The second one (C-FHKE) was redesigned using all laser cut components and is powered by a Saito V 200Ti. This time I used a builtup wing and used a fixed gear. I plan to equip it with retracts at a future date. Weight came in a 13.75 lbs.

DarkWingDuck, is being appropriately modest about his Dalotel, I received a laser cut kit from him for this Dalotel and it is great. The plans, wood and construction support are excellent. I plan to start construction this winter, I will use a Satio 180 and retracts. I have wanted a nice 1/4 scale Dalotel since the late 70's this one is perfect. If you are a builder and want a nice Dalotel you cant go wrong with this one.

I've been messing with doing a dalotel with an MVVS 160, with a tuned pipe, I wanted to have it hidden but with the shape of the fuselage being soo skinny, I'm really struggling.
This is as good as I'll get with the standard 90° header.[img][/img]

Hi,
Here is another Prettner Dalotel photo, from Simprop catalog 1984. Just in case someone want to paint a Dalotelsimilar to one of Prettner old Dalotel.

David, just enlarge the picture (blue button in lower right corner) or view it in a graphics program at 200% and you'll see that it's blue with dark blue pinstripes and light blue stripes a bit apart in the yellow. The purple must be an artifact of the reduced display.

Thanks,
it wasn't so much because I'm unable to tell the color of the picture. It has more to do with the accuracy of old film stock. I've seen some of his models where he used purple for bottoms and was wondering if that was a darker color than the picture shows.

Ron,
thanks for that one... yea, see - that now looks purple (maybe violet is more correct) to me with cub yellow and light pink.
Can't trust old film stock or old pictures for that matter.
Still, blue or violet will do - I'll decide at the time what strikes to combine best.
Come to think of it, I wonder if there's any difference in design of the Dalotel and Calypso wing. He used the same anti-vortex tips on the Magic, Dalotel and Calypso. The Dalotel and Calypso were all front only taper wings. There actually may be no difference in airfoil between Hanno's Dalotel and the Calypso - that would be interesting to find out.

Here are two pics of my 1.20 powered Dalotel......... in Pepto-Bismal colors....
BTW, would anyone know what the correct wing and stab incidences are for the Dalotel? The one pictured has -1 degrees incidence in the wing.

David, of course I didn't consider you dumb, but Bo wrote that the picture is from a catalog and print colors don't fade that much if not exposed to light. I imagined to clearly see the colors in spite of the scan pixelization and the print rasterization.
The photo, on the other hand, indeed shows what you meant and is very reddish like most old negative film. (Is it even a film scan without compensation for the standard red tone of the film material?) Here it is with a new (aggressive) white balance. In the graphics program (GIMP) the white balance was set to -100 red and +75 blue. Still the ground looks too red but the cars maybe look a tad too blue (and red at the same time). Anyway, the skin tones look quite right and - surprise - Hanno's pullover is now light blue. The wing bottom is dark blue, only the stripe in the yellow is pink. There seem to be red or white pinstripes (?), and there's a red part left of Hanno's leg (shadow?). After playing with the white balance I think these findings (especially the blue) are quite reliable.
By the way, seems Hanno planned for a much bigger tuned pipe, or what?
And I, too, would really like to know which airfoils Hanno used. It started with the Curare article where he talks about some arcane, wind-tunnel-tested airfoils for wing and stab making Curare a completely different model. But I suspect that he simply used one of the special aerobatic airfoils designed by Eppler at that time. I should finally check that.
P.S.: An even better way to correct the colors was to find a grey-point (the bumper of the second car from left) in the color value tool of the graphics program. Still it seems to be a reddish blue (RGB 63/63/116).

David,
Many years ago I was not sure about the color of that dark bottom of the Taurus.
Nobody could tell for sure the real color.
End of story was I did fly for long with dark marine blue my best choice of that moment.
After seeing the original two Taurusses I do my own color reconstruction and only believe the most original picture most and after that my own reconstructed pictures .
To give you a second opinion I show you the result of my own reconstruction process I use.
The picture 2 is the picture of the last post (ty64408), of what I do understand it is the end (best?) result of this moment.
Picture 3 is the picture I did use mk24847
Color reconstruction for me is the same as dimension reconstruction, always be very careful with that and look for a second method to check. For that I already did use several screens for “my second opinion picture to check again for too much blue”!

Check the color of the tail lights on the car in the top left corner. I think the middle photo shows a more accurate red. The one on the left is too blue.

This one has probably been posted before. The model was covered in Monokote so the metallic blue at least should be easy to match from their color chart ( $1.90 from Tower Hobbies) Another feature shown in some of the shots is the (very small) size of wing joiner. Looked to me at the time like a piece of Graupner rectangular brass box/steel strip as used for glider wings.

Ray,
Is that the same plane?
Look the red ovals, without trying to look for all the differences:
Wingtips
Yellow fuse side surfaces
Engine with cilinder heads
I did not compare dimensions, that would be my next step!

Taurus flyer, you're right, they're not the same plane.
Here's the top to the "retouched" photoset, Berusty had in his post before.

totally different, I think you'll agree.
