Its been about 2-1/2 years ago I got the sport license.
I was a registered ultralight pilot.....
The guy that owned the plane basically taught me to fly it , then coached me to the Check ride.
The DAR came to my house and I did the check ride from my back yard......
I got a 90 on the FAA exam.
I love that plane and hope to own/build one one day

a mile down the road a guy blew himself up with a bug bomb he set off (didnt turn stove pilot light off)
He was toasty.
The paper said "the fire dept created" a landing zone to evacuate the patient by air.
IT'S a Friggin airport!

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
just fooling around today, and found out that i can cover EPS foam with monokote fairly nicely without melting the foam, and it stiffens it up to the point where strapping tape wouldn't be needed. This would be very nice for someone trying to make a scale jet pr something. By the way, you can find white EPS foam sheets in the same aisle as BluCor. It sands very nicely, and is good for making actual wings and complicated fuse's that need smooth edges. (i.e. it needs to be sanded) The only size i could find is 1/2" thick, so blucor or depron would still be nice for the tail surfaces.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
If ANYONE CAN HELP:
I'm STILL looking for a wholesle provider for WHITE Depron (not papered) that is 24in X 48in by 6mm thick...
Can't find it anywhere... rcfoam.com didn't have it (though he's still looking in to getting it for me)...
Also, I am expirementing with the 4X8ft 1/2in styrofoam insulation sheets sold at Home Depot & Lowes (only one side is White though) this material is about as light or lighter than Depron (it feels like) even though it is twice as thick.
This is for the Paper Airplane RC model I built.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
try to find EPS(expanded polystyrene) insulation. This is basically the white foam that comes in a computer or tv box that is molded and put over the sides to protect it. It is pretty stiff, though not quite like depron. The EPS insulation is a little higher quality than the stuff that comes in boxes, and sands very nicely. You could easily make a plane out of this, and all you would need for reinforcements would be to cover it in monokote. (make sure the iron is set to about half heat.)

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
Hey guys.. Been a while. I got really bored at work so I built a mini Geobat out of some foam plates
Yes, that is a dime on the nose and it flies really really well.

Rubbing alcohol will make short work of the paper on foam board. I seal several sheets inside a garbage bag with a bottle of rubbing alcohol (also bought at the dollar store) I flip and rotate the bag to make sure they all get wet. Let it set, then remove and let dry. Paper peels off like it was held on with static cling.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
I've been messing around with the mini geobat glider some more today. I took the center section and made another lil glider out of it. Then I put it back in the center and lo and behold, it still flys that way. So I've got a little 3 in 1 glider.
The thing that amazes me about the original geobat design is; no matter how hard I throw it, it still flies. Most little foam/paper gliders eventually get to a point where you throw them so hard that they just fail, not the geobat...
Mine is a 4.5 inch diameter.

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
I have been thinking about a geobat or biplane myself. Never have built a biplane. Have several plans for them. The geobat looks like a good build also. My sheet is about 27" X 39" , paid 7 bucks for it. Don't know if that was a good deal. I didn't really care at the time..... Just wanted to buy it because I never have built with Depron. Maybe a jet???

RE: Fun with Flat Foam
ntjp2005, if you plan on painting the Depron be careful. Many rattle-can paints will melt the foam unless you proceed very slowly. Test on scrap 1st.
