Default RE: Closing Threads

We do allow threads if they tie in to RC in some way or another. My guess (and I have not read it) is that frances thread probably discusses flying fields and damage at some point. I know that not every post in that thread or any other for that matter always touches on RC but as long as the theme of the thread has some general tie in we typically allow it.

On the other one I would think the only RC related ones are where members have related jobs in the hobby field, aeronautics, electronics or something in some way tied in or where their knowledge is somehow tied to the hobby. Obviously if a guy is a veterinarian or a bricklayer their posts are going to be unrelated but that begs the question of how brutally diligent we really want to be here.

I don't have any idea what the other thread you referenced was about DD214

I'm the culprit. I could not see any tie to RC so I closed it.

The What Do You Do for a Living thread has been up for several months. Not long after it was started there were a couple of alerts sent by members saying that it should be closed because it was not RC related. There was a good bit of discussion among the moderators about closing it, and the majority felt it should be left open, even though it was not directly RC related. The feeling was that it helped build a sense of community among the members by getting to know each other.

If anyone cares to search around I'm sure there are several weather related threads open that are not directly related to RC. They may not all talk about how the wind, temperature, precipitation, or humidity impacts our flying, but I think most members would agree that our hobby is influenced by the weather.

Off topic posts have always been a hot topic at RCU. Keeping things RC related has worked well for the site. The argument has been made that almost any topic can be tied to RC if one tries hard enough. I transport my planes in a pick up truck. So should a thread be allowed that discusses rebuilding the transmission in my plane transport vehicle? I don't, but I'm sure some disagree.

Deciding if a post is RC related enough for RCU is often a subjective decision, and like all things subjective, there will always be differences of opinions. I have goofed before on my decisions, and am sure that I will goof again. As always, if the administrators or the majority of moderators feel that a mistake was made, it is corrected.

No one likes it when one of their threads is closed. I think that is just human nature. Regardless of why it was closed it is easy to take having a thread closed personally. When I close a thread I attempt to share with the member why the thread was closed without coming across as fussing. If I failed in my attempt this time I apologize.

Eric
