There is already a fair amount of activity in this subject and there are some models already available.

Although a UAV can be made more or less from a conventional R/C Airplane,

these UAV somewhat scale jobs also exist

And what better to complete a UAV with Intelligent Flight On Screen Display with GPS. They equip their units with auto home return when your plane/heli looses radio contact.

Is this forum a about modeling UAV or building and designing UAVs? I have a setup with GPS, flight stabilization, bla, bla, bla. Is that what we are talking about here?

Hey this place is about UAV and anything regarding this right? So there are those who share the interest but don't know how to approach it right? Well heck they came to the right place !!! So for starters the above links are the tools, next is the imagination and with a little bit of help from you pros we can share the fun! Just hope where ever you live it's not a problem with the feds. We don't want to break any rules here!

Most of those "pros" are severely limited in what they can share. Most would like to, but they have things in the way that prevent a lot of it. I'm pretty sure they will go where they can.

You are only breaking the AMA rules if you want insurance coverage and fly at an AMA sanctioned field. Otherwise, no problem with them.

I'm thinking of FAA bans on autonomously controlled aircraft that was talked about at the federal level a while back. Inspired by Homeland Security, IIRC.

Hi,

The real issue about the FAA and UAVs is really the following:

1) Are the flights commercial in nature, if so, no matter the size or reason or altitude, the flight falls under FAA jurisdiction.

2) Any flights outside of the "line of sight" control raises major red flags with FAA regardless if the purpose is hobby pursuit or not.

I am currently working with the FAA for my UAV research (uni).

The story is, if it can go autonomous and you aren't a hobbyist, its banned. Actually, everything non-hobby is banned.

Thanks for clarifying the situation. I was mistaken associating the illegality with autonomous flight. It is "out-of-sight" operation that serves as the trigger. Now that that is out of the way, back to hardware. <G>

*****Oops, didn't see the immediately above post. Anyway, back to hardware. Questions answered.

Interesting. I should have indicated that I was referring to our small model planes with cameras, etc like we fly at club fields.

R/C modelers are going to have a natural interest in onboard systems for cameras and remote flight systems. This is similar to the boundaries for the model rocket hobby if you think about it. Modelers are going to want to experiment with all kinds of onboard things.

The FAA has pretty much said anything flying that is "non-recreational" in purpose is technically an unmanned system and falls under their regulations, thus requiring permission to operate.

http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/...ineering/uapo/

This document explains things pretty clearly.

Anyone that can make a model airplane fly by itself can make any airplane, of any size, fly itself. This type of knowlege doesn't seem too popular with the folks in charge.

We have pro's in the UAV field abroad and oversea's only problem with getting info from them is you can't.
These people are developing next generation of reconn and the military is not going to let info out.
I wish I could get more info from the " pro's " but these guys are not going to put themselves in a bad situation just to post on RCU. There is stuff going on with ucav and uav's that we would be totally blown away about.
Best way, Join the Air Force.
Thankx to the pros for giving us all something to talk about

Wish we knew more

I was following a public message from Mark of Intelligent Flights . It is regarding the old EB-85A Firmware GPS software updates.

MARK HARRIS SAYS:

Hello Everyone,

We've finally convinced ETek to allow us to send in old EB-85A's to get their firmware updated. We're wanting to get as many as possible to cut down on the postage cost per person to and from ETek.

You'll be without your GPS unit for approx 1-1.5 months i'm afraid. This is due to ~5 days to get to me, then ~5 days to get back to you... with 2 days to and from ETek. (all business days.. not including weekends) plus the time it takes for them to do the updates.

We're only going to charge you the cost of postage and the stuff used in packaging.

Costs:
* Postage back to you: US$15 (up to about 15GPS units)
* Postage to/from ETek: US$12 + $2 per additional unit (your share in a DHL express parcel)
* Firmware update: Free

Also, your GPS unit *must* be in perfect working condition. If it does not work it will simply be thrown out and your money refunded. Please don't waste our time with dead units

Agreed. Might as well get paid for your efforts. Going with an air carrier after leaving the Air Force would be working too cheap.

How about an interview?
Just kidding, not really that would be awesome. My son will be getting the air force to pay for his aero-eng
degree and if he dont make it into the chair of an F-22 or F-35 he probably will get paid for his efforts working for similar co if not yours! I will be stuck programming machine tools and flying rc for the rest of my days.
