Default Backup battery in the T18SZH Transmitter

I contacted Futaba a month or so ago and the Technical Support Representative insisted that the T18SZ transmitter
does not have a backup battery!

Can someone at Futaba tell me if it does?

There a is post on Helifreak.com saying that it does have one and it is the reason my transmitter has been losing its time and date when
the main battery is removed for charging.

My transmitter is working fine otherwise.

You already contacted FutabaUSA and they say it does not have an internal B/U battery, so not clear what you are asking.

Just to confirm, I have contacted FutabaUSA myself.

The 18SZ does NOT have a back up battery. Time/Date will reset because no internal battery/ Model programming retained in non-volatile memory

my 18 sz,
appears to have something helping to hold the date and time.
possibly a capacitor, or something similar.
just did the unplug the battery for 10-15 min, while working on other stuff, and when i plug back in, the date and time were both accurate.

You need to leave it out for an hour or so, like if charging it.

So "if the 18SZ doesn't have any back up battery, then why does this one ???
Copied from HeliFreaks posting.

I was told tht a battery does not show on the schematics hence FutabaUSA saying "no battery". But that picture sure looks like one.

Hi Bill,
Now you know why was asking this question!
My transmitter never lost the date and time when I removed the battery for faster charging with my iCharger 4010DUO in the past.

Now it does - and after seeing another post I questioned it again. I can easily replace the battery myself if I have to - and might even use a supercapacitor.

those CRXXXX cells do NOT take being soldered to well.
very easy to overheat one, and cause it to vent.

Its not soldered - its in a spring clip.

Default Backup RTC battery

I opened up my T18SZH last night to take a look at the backup battery.
Mine looks just like the above picture except it is not removable. It might have started out as a spring clip but there are 3 tiny spot welds on it.

The part number under the clip is XH414HG and it is listed as a 0.08F capacitor. It is also an obsolete part now.

I ordered part number ML414H from Digi-key which is a "high capacity" 1.0mA rechargeable battery and should work fine.
It even looks the same and is made by Seiko Instruments. The size is the same too.

This part is soldered to the board.

It will be nice to have the Date and Time not reset if I remove the main battery.
I have been avoiding doing this by using Futaba's charger which actually works fast but doesn't balance the cells.

I’m a bit concerned that you are trying to replace a capacitor with a battery, you may well completely fry your board.
I had a quick search and found this which looks like the part you’re trying to replace.

Default Concerned

Capacitor or battery....not much of a difference here.
Not concerned at all with this, the battery is slow charged at a very low rate just to keep it up in voltage.

Absolutely no chance of "frying the board"..

Can I use super capacitor as battery?

Applications. The supercapacitor is often misunderstood; it is not a battery replacement to store long-term energy. If, for example, the charge and discharge times are more than 60 seconds, use a battery; if shorter, then the supercapacitor becomes economical.

Default Completed

I replaced the one in my T18SZH with a rechargeable Lithium Battery. The size was an exact fit.
However I had to do it at work under a microscope because of its small size.

Technically it should be a super capacitor but this should work fine.

Working great now
