Default 12Z Temperature Related Screen Problem

Bax,

I took my 12Z to the field Sunday. The temperature was in the high 80's with low humidity. When I took the transmitter out of the box and turned it on, I noticed that the edges of the screen were dark and there was a dark streak across the middle. Per our club policy I put the transmitter in our impound (not in the case) while it was not being used which is shaded all the time. The dark areas didn't clear up while the radio stayed in the impound all afternoon, in fact it didn't clear up until I got it home and took it inside the house. I have had a 6XAS, 7CAP and 9CAP over the last 5 years and I have never experienced this before. I am concerned that the problem will become worse as the temperatures go up. Have you received any other posts or complaints about this? Is there something wrong with the screen? What can I do to avoid this problem?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks for your help.

Fly safe and have fun !!
David

I too have noticed a dark tinge around the edges in warmer temperatures. Hasn't been more than an annoying problem- yet. I don't have the dark streak across the screen that you have though.

An LCD can discolor if it gets too hot. Getting over 140 degrees F can start the process. A transmitter lying in direct Summer sunlight can become warm enough to have the LCD become discolored. If the screen is discolored at lower temperatures, then it may need to be replaced.

Thanks Bax,

I'll keep the transmitter as cool as I can.

Hello everyone,

At the risk of feeling a little stupid (which I do). I wanted to let everyone konw that I solved the problem I thought I was having with my transmitter screen. I went to my flying field on July 4th to fly my new Dragon Lady. I put my pin up and turned the transmitter and the screen was discolored. The temperature was only 80 degrees so I assured myself that it temperature was not the problem. Then I turned on some of my friends' transmitters who owned Hitec, Airtornics, other Futaba and even a JR 10X radio (obviously while nobody was flying) but saw no discoloration on any of their transmitter screens. Anyway, while I was running another tank of fuel to the motor on my plane, I took my sunglasses off to whipe my forehead and when I looked down at my transmitter, the screen was perfectly clear, with no discoloration. As it turned out, it was the coating of my sunglasses that was causing the problem all along!![:'(]. Needless to say, I will be looking for a new pair of sunglasses.

Fly safe and have fun!!

OK. Polarized lenses on your sunglasses can play havoc with an LCD screen. The screens use plastics, many of which can polarize light. If the axis of polarization of your lenses is oriented "just right" with the LCD screen, then you won't be able to see the screen very well at all.
