Default DLE Plastic Wire Loom

OK fellows, here is your opportunity to have a good laugh. But that is ok, as long as somebody answers my question.

What is the " PLASTIC WIRE LOOM " that comes with the DLE-20 used for ? Have never seen others using it on their engines and is it really necessary ? Can only assume that it is used to wrap the ignition wire. But as I stated, I do not see others using it for that purpose.

Thanks ............

And you can stop laughing now ............... [>:]

It is used to protect the wiring from rubbing on associated parts. See photo of plug lead, its on a DLE30 but I also use the same stuff for radio wiring.

Cheers

Thanks Ghost ! Works for me .............

I was concerned that it was needed to wrap the ignition wire, to prevent interference in some way.

Just an FYI, a plug wire rubbing on a fiberglass cowl gets ruined in pretty short order. You don't wnat your plug wires to fray or be worn through by fiberglass cowls or wood edges. Same applies to any other wires in the plane.

Strictly physical protection for the cable. If the metal braid on your plug lead touches the sharp edge of a cowl or similar object, it can cut well into the cable and ruin it in less than a full flight! Protect it at all cost or you will have the pleasure of replacing the ignition before its time.

I prefer the split lomb type of cable duct over the spiral wrap style myself but that is just personal preference. If the lead can come in direct contact with a hot exhaust pipe, I add an additional layer of high temp silicone tubing so the duct can't melt. It doesn't matter what you use for protection, just use something you are comfortable with and keep the plug lead well away from anything that can abrade it.

That wire loom will also help stop any metal to metal rubbing that can and will generate RFI, like your plug wire rubbing in your muffler.

Those of you that are members of the AMA should read the Giant Scale Aerobatics column in Model Aviation. John Glezellis does most of the articles. He's been doing a running dialog on setting up giant scale planes for awhile now. I don't agree with everything he says he does but there's a lot of good info in the articles to help out gas newbies.

If you do everything you can to stop the plug lead from rubbing directly on anything it runs next .... all the benefits are automatic from that point forward!
