I think it because they are priced available to more people. I know a bunch of Top Brand users in my area that don't attempt repair, don't even tune much. Since they have the great warranty, the "problem" just goes back to the maker. They don't boast or complain much since someone else is doing their work.

Why do cheap engines make lengthy threads?

That may be true of other engines, but DLE is pretty robust. My friend Bill GW had a DLE that had a cracked cylinder among other problems with his DLE. It took him awhile to get it going but he did get it going. When I dosee him at the field more times than not I ask him what engine is in his airplane that he brought to the field and most of the time it is "DLE".
I dont think that the less you spend the more problems you have is valid for the DLE brand in general. I do believe however that guys coming over from nitro to gas have a "nitro" mentality and some are afraid to touch the needles. I have heard many times that the needles are at factory settings. Those engines will run with the "factory" settings, but in the air the engineis not on "step" especially in the mid range. Some guys accept help, others do not.
Someguyswill not touch theneedles others that do atleast are trying.
So thereis a little bit of a learning curve involved going from nitro to gas and some of the junk engines outthere will not tune correctly, but Ihave not found that to bethe case with DLE.
Just saying.

I have three DLE 20s.Two have been great, the other has had problems. First the throttle butterfly screw came loose, wouldn't idle down, couldn't land until it quit. Vibration damaged carb, so new carb was installed. Then started sagging on first flight with new carb, landed ok, but then wouldn't run. Acted like it was starving for fuel. Found there were two internal screens in the carb. One on top of the other. Removed one and put back together. Ran fine for about two flights, then while running up before another flight, it quit with prop free wheeling. Crank is broken.
Its on the way back to Tower. I'll see what they do. Not really bad mouthing the engine. Two have been great. Its light weight and powerful and I am sure internal parts are under a lot of stress. Bound to be a failure every now and then.

Now that's a perspective I've not heard before, but there's probably a lot of truth in it.

RE: Went cheap. bought a DLE 20 and got burnt!!! UPDATE!
I thought I would give an update on my dle 20 and my cermark pitts that I crashed when the dle 20 locked up. First, I sent the dle-20 back to tower and they shipped me a new engine, I will also install the engine back on the pitts. My flying buddy decided not to buy it do to issues he has had with his dle-20.
I don't like to work on crashed airplanes but buying replacement parts wasn't an option because they are no longer available. I had to either total the pitts out or fix it. The thought of having to swallow my pride and admit that I destroyed the plane was just too much, so I decided to repair it and it turned out good! I also have bought a new evolution 26gx and a cermark pitts like mine, new in the box, on RCU and will build a second one. I really love how this plane flys and having two of them will allow me to fly the beater pitts with the dle-20 on the real windy days and the new pitts with the evolution 26 on the good days! Win-Win situation for me!

Kurt,
Looks good! Repairs are not that hard once you get started. I also get p'd off when I damage my birds but I pride them more once they are fixed up. Risk is part of our obsession, but the rewards of good flying is priceless.
Have fun.

Thanks, for all the positive comments! I will cut the red pinstrip for the lower wing tonight and get it back on! I really enjoyed repairing this bird, and also like the convience of being able to take her to the field "ready to fly" in the back of my van! Just set her on the ground, gas her up and go for it!

Tower replaced my broken DLE 20 with a new one. Less than two weeks. It is already installed. Unfortunately I'll be out of town working for a few days so can't run it in just yet. Some people forced me out of retirement my bribing me with money.
