Default What is it???

I need a little help IDing this engine that I am looking to sell for the estate of a freind. I would be nice to know what it is before I put it on RCU. That is a 3-way switch on top of the electronic thing ( Ignition?)
I hope someone knows what it is.

Thanks

Thought it may be a Q50 but I never saw that kind of ignition. Most have a button magnet or some kind of pickup on the flywheel this has none but the big magnet

No doubt about it, the engine is a Ryobi 31 weed whacker conversion. Uses a 18-8 prop

But the ignition device witht the three way switch must be a C-H Jump Start?

May be a Homelite 25cc. It definitely has a jump start on it that it does'nt need. That thing will hand start very easy.

Weed Wacker conversion....Now that you say it I remember him saying something about his flying weed eater! Is there something that is to be plugged into the jump start?

It needs a battery - probably a 4.8v 1600 ma for the start feature then you throw the switch the other way and remove the battery after the engine is running.

Jump Start:

It is a battery powered system to boost the magneto output. It will make a hot spark at any RPM, most mags require 600+rpm to fire. It also retards the timing to around 5 deg BTDC so that the engine won't kick back. Once the engine starts it becomes a stock engine on the mag with no timing control. Terry Grant

Definately a Ryobi weedy engine, looks as though it has a ignition kill switch fitted.
The rest would be electronic kill switch to shut down the engine if radio signal is lost.

I gave away many engines a while back in the conversion forum. Had way too many! I did keep one Ryobi that I had too much work into...and now think about making a backplate, so I can install a DLE 30 reed box and carb. One other item ...it will need a stronger rod. Who knows, it may kick butt! Capt,n

100% sure: Ryobi 31 cc engine. With the flywheel a bear to hand start. With electronic ignition a very nice engine. However, it will cut out unexpectedly if idle rpm is too low.

Here's more info on the jump start system. These were intended for the Zenoah G45 and G62. It appears this Ryobi may have been converted by CH?

Don't forget to download the instructions PDF files

Thanks Guys. As always the info is priceless!!!!. BTW I followed the wiring on the 3-way switch and one of you is correct in that in one position the jump start is on and in one the jump start is off. The third position i sto ground the mag.

So what I got to sell is a cross dressing weed wacker engine that needs Viagra Thanks,,,I think

Thanks again

With the original weed whacker carb it will turn around 6900 to 6950 with a 18 -8 prop.

With a 11.11 mm carb it will do close to 7400 on a 18- 8 prop

I have one that does 8500 on an 18 x 6 Zinger. It is not recommended to run them over 7500 though as they have a weak rod. It is a decent engine for what it is, and is nice and narrow for slim cowls like Mustangs and Tiger Moths, but it is a bit heavy. I have one in a 76" wing span Tiger Moth and it flies great.

You are going to love this. My friend had this thing in an 80" Bipe, that was crashed or should I say crushed. It was hanging in his garage above the car with one wing off and that wing fell and his wife ran over it putting the car in one night. As far as i knew the thing never flew, unless you consider that glide to the fooor a flight.

Long ago CH made a Jump Start for the larger Quadra 50,65,75s. It just so happened that the same JS worked on US Engines and Ryobis.
The switch should be marked START and KILL, in the center it is in the run position.
