Hello all,
I recently purchased an ESM Skyraider from someone in my club that came with a beam mounted, 30cc gas engine that has no markings other than the number 30 on one side. He purchased it at the WRAM show last year and it came with the engine already installed. The engine looks new and he said he only ran it a couple of times but that it was difficult to start.
The engine is truly very hard to start and once started and run for one flight, refuses to start no matter what is done to it. This past Sunday, we were able to get it started and take one 9 minute flight to trim the model but were not able to get it running again. We spent several hours doing everything we could think of and could not get it to start. It would kick as if it were going to start but would not.
I think it may be an RCS engine as I looked up the ignition and found a picture of an engine that looked like mine. As I mentioned before, it has no markings except the number 30 on one side. One thing worth mentioning is that it comes with a Walbro 225B carburetor and the ignition wire sticks into the back plate on the engine. It comes with a Falkon ignition, and it has a Bisson muffler on it which I removed for the pictures.
I have posted some pics here to help identify it. My question is, does anyone have any idea what engine this may be, and provide me with any ideas as to how to get it to run?
We verified battery voltage (4 cell, 5 volts), spark on the plug, fuel to the plug, fuel mixture - we have tried 50:1 and 100:1 with Amsoil, choke on - choke off, etc. As mentioned before, we can usually get it to start once, but not again after that initial time. The engine runs with plenty of power and compression and I would like to keep it in the plane if I can get it to start and run reliably.
Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Regards,
Cesar

Cesar, It's always a good idea to rebuild a carburetor first if you are unsure of a engine's history. Get a rebuild kit locally or try one of the many parts suppliers on the net for the kit your carb needs. Dan.

First: Nice looking engine.
Second: It's new add more oil, go to 32:1.
Third: Soldier closed the hole in the choke plate.
Fourth: Open both needles to 1 3/4 out as starting place.

The engine looks like a Moki 30 F. Good engine.
The Falkon ignitions can present problems to some and (by memory) they do not retard for starting which contributes to the hard starting.

Hello all,
Thank you very much for all of your feedback. I apologize for not coming on sooner but I had to do that damn work thing and did not get a chance to come back online until this morning.
I'll mix up a new batch of gas at the 32:1 ratio as well as reset the needle valve now that I have a fair idea of the default settings and go from there. I want to see if the problem is something simple I'll rebuild the carb as soon as I get the kit for it, it is cheap and will rule that possibility out as the plane had been sitting for at least a year without use before I got it.
Soarrich, can you please give me a little more detail on which hole in the choke plate you were referring to when you said "Third: Soldier closed the hole in the choke plate."
I am fairly new to gas engines and would not want to solder the wrong thing shut.
Lastly, should none of this work out. Does anyone know of a good engine guy that would be able to work on this engine to get it to work? I don't mind paying if the outcome will be a good working, reliable engine. As I mentioned in an earlier post, when this engine is running, it has plenty of power to pull this plane around. I would like to keep it in the plane as it has already been set up with the beam mounts for it. I would have to do some rework of the firewall to get an engine that uses standoffs in there.
Thank you all again for your help. I will keep you posted of what I find.
Regards.
