dle20 or a os 120??
I have an os 120e and its still in the box and a friend called and wanted to know if I would part with it.I previously sold my pica waco ymf to him and now wants a motorand I hinted I might part.the reason being I am considering a dle20.now I already have the dle 30 on a wildhare edge and love it.I guess I am wondering does the dle20 outperform the 4 stroke 120.is it really fair to even compare the 2 ..my sense tells me the dle20 is stronger .so what do you guys think..

Yes the DLE will out perform the OS 120 FS. I just replaced an OS 120 with a DLE 20 in a Top Flite kit built P-40. It has significantly more power. Also replaced an OS 120 in a VQ Hurricane. The OS turned a 15-8 three blade prop 8,250. The DLE turns the same prop about 8,550 rpm.

Well maybe a hair off topic but would you guys still feel the same way about replacing the 120AX. It is a stump pulling power house like TimBle said.

RE: dle20 or a os 120??
ok ok OK!lol.I am a convert ...I wanted to know how passionate everyone is about having small affordable gassers and you CONVINCED me.and no I dont hate four strokes on the contrary I enjoy them and thats why I wont let my satios go.but how can you not love the simplicity the gas gives you and the awesome performance,I fly my 1/4 scale spacewalker last weekend all day and looked at a nearly empty jug of 18.00 fuel for one plane, the dle20 would have cost 3.56 for a gallon and even on a 8 ounce tank I am told that after 8 to 10 minutes I would still have almost a third tank left.and my flights usually last 6 or 7 minutes.I carried my flight box and it weighed a freaking ton,,when I fly my dle 30 my plane my fuel and basically that is it.light!
now do I invest in a pitts wrap around such as J'tech..I am stillusing the stock muffler on my WH and was disappointed as to how much I had to cut away.yuk.and what is the most popular size prop for agreesive aerobatics aka mild 3D.
anyone flying 3dh or extreme flight planes on dle20.I also want to build a p47.man I am excited too.

Depends on the airframe. If the OS 120AX is in a Mustang or Spitfire then I'll leave it right there. Its a fairly small footprint and fits nicely in the cowls of the ESM range. The DLE 20 will require a bit of dremeling to get clearance for the spark plug cap.
But if that does not phase you then the DLE gets my vote on sound and running simplicity alone.

My first gasser was a DLE55. I liked it so much I now own a "few" more. There are a couple of tools available at most on-line dealers that will really assist the new gas owner with RCXL ignitions. RCXL makes an ignition tester and a hall sensor tester. Those two tools will help you diagnose most electrical issues and they are not that expensive.
They help me make the diagnosis of the electrical and will allow you to move on to the real issue if it is not electrical, such as fuel issues. JMHO

I put the DLE 20 in my Extra 300 60-90 and I will never go back to nitro. The DLE is stronger however, I can't get the db down under 98. Also compare $30 nitro to $3.40 hi octane gas. Oh yea. it pulls my plane like nothing is there.

To help lower the bark of the DLE's stock muffler quite a bit there is available from most DLE dealers a little aluminium plug in muffler stack adapter with several holes of varing sizes that significantly tones down the exhaust noise and reduces the max rpm by only a couple hundred rpm.

RE: dle20 or a os 120??
I'll stick to OS. I see too many gas users spending more time tweeking there engines. Seems to me a gas is no better to getup set that a glow engine, and more times than
not they seem to take way longer to start.. with all that priming an flipping till it finally starts. WIth my OS, they always start on the first try! Fueling is even easier. None of that
mixing ratio of oil to gas, etc. Just pour in the nitro amd lite er up! And its still plenty cheap for me at least :-)

RE: dle20 or a os 120??
I've had both the DLE-20 and OS120AX and can say that power is equal, if not better on the DLE. The OS was a VERY nice engine, and always started on the first or second backflip of the prop. Never had any deadsticks that weren't my fault. But I did get tired of the slime from the glow fuel and also the cost. The DLE is MUCH cheaper to operate and no more slime. That said, it was a little more trouble getting it to start, and tuning is critical. The low speed needle is extremely sensitive and 1/16" turn could make it go from too lean to too rich. However, once you get it set, it runs fantastic. Plus, instead of a 16oz tank, you can use a 6oz and fly for the same amount of time. Plus, gas and oil is available pretty much anywhere, so if you don't have a LHS close by to get your glow fuel from, this could be a benefit. Weight is within 1/2oz for each of them when you factor in muffler and ignition. (I used a one-battery setup so didn't have to worry with an ignition battery. )
So it really boils down to this: Are you comfortable taking the time ti tune a gas engine properly? If so, the DLE is a much better deal because of all the other advantages. If you want to bolt the engine on and fly, the OS120AX is excellent.
